Dining Out - Flagstaff Hotel

Flagstaff Hotel

As a final meal out with all 5 of us, we headed down the hill to the Flagstaff. I'd not been before, though Mum had been and thought it was good, and while we could have gone to the Vic again, I like new places. Located on the corner of South Rd and Flagstaff Hill Rd, I'd been past many times before, and always thought it would be nice to stop in and have a meal.

It's really quite a hard building to miss

Upon arriving we weren't initially greeted, but before we made it through the queue to where orders are placed a staff member appeared and showed us to our table. We were out in the middle of the quite spacious dining area with a good view out the large windowed wall.

Nearby to where we were was the soup, salad, and vegetable bar that comes with all the main meals, and could be purchased for a bit extra with entrees or on it's own. It was a quite nice selection, with the interesting soup the day we were there being a pumpkin laksa. They also had some quite excellent roast potatoes in the vegetable selections, with multiple selections taking up the rest of the side the soup was on. The other side contained condiments and salads, with quite a few selections, including all my regulars - seafood salad, cold pasta salad, potato salad, and beetroot. The bread rolls were plentiful, but still warm which is good. Often when there is a large supply of them, they're cold/cool, and not as nice.

There was an order of the roast of the day (beef), a couple of fish and chips, one with 1 piece and the other opting for 2 pieces, a Chicken Schnitzel with gravy, and my order...

As soon as it came out mum commented that it would do her 3 meals at least

That's a Beef Schnitzel with the Hawaiian Topping. It was massive, and I only got through half of it before I was way too full. It consists of a plate crossing schnitzel, covered in a thick tomato based sauce, then topped with at least 3 layers of ham, a very generous quantity of pineapple covering that, and then all covered by cheese that was melted and browned under the grill.

It was delicious, but way too much food. Having had these things before, I fully expected that it would be way too much food though, but this exceeded my expectations of just how much food it was. A word of advice to others going here, if you are like me and rarely finish your main and like to take the leftovers home, bring your own take away container or similar. They don't supply them, which I'm pretty sure is to do with the all you can eat soup/salad/vegetable bar, and unscrupulous people in the past loading up their take away 'leftovers' with stuff from that instead. We didn't think to have a container with us, so just used a few napkins to wrap the second half of the schnitzel up in and transferred it to a container once we were home.

Food was very good, all you can eat bar was very nice, service was decent, pricing was reasonable to a little above, atmosphere was good (there's a kids play area over the other end of the dining area with some electronic games etc that you couldn't even hear in the main area). Overall I'd recommend going here if you're a fan of the pub meal, and/or places with salad bars, or just if you want to try somewhere new and are in the area.

Mate, this just made me hungry.

Bon appetite to me!

Enjoy your meal. I haven't been eating this good since I got home, but I have at least cooked something for the neglected 'packet meals' posts I was doing.

lol the serving of chips is dwarfed by the size of that beef!! You did get to get through half.

Also it's a pet peeve of mine when you walk into any restaurant-type establishment and don't get greeted, if I'm in a bad enough mood sometimes I just walk out!

Thanks for sharing your review :)

Likewise. At least attentive staff that notice you've entered, rather than standing around for 30 seconds working out where you have to go to let them know the 6pm reservation for 5 has arrived. And then joining the queue because at least there's a staff member at the front of it. Based on where the staff member came from, they'd had to duck into the kitchen/other staff area for a minute or so.

There really weren't many chips, which was good, as they weren't that great. They were ok, but we're still missing the ones from the lighthouse wharf that were excellent. At least there were only a couple hiding under the schnitzel too!

Love the Flaggy. Been there, and the Vic, many many times.

I do quite like the Vic, and we've been there many times. So helpful that there is often a shopper docket voucher for 25% off or 2 for 1 if you're lucky.

Even went there for my first anniversary with my now fiancee. Quite a reasonable eatery
