Dining Out - The Lighthouse Wharf

The Lighthouse Wharf

Behind me is the Lighthouse and the wharf that the hotel is named for

As part of our day out in Port Adelaide, we went out for lunch at one of the many pubs around. It was initially chosen due to the specials signs on the balcony banners, but being a public holiday, they weren't actually happening on the day that we were there, but we stayed anyway.

All four of us chose to have the Chicken Schnitzel, with three of us choosing the Mushroom sauce, and one plain gravy. When the plates came out, it looked like a pretty decent decision to stick about and try the food anyway. At $18, they're a bit pricey but for what we got, if you come on schnitzel day when it's only $14.50 you're getting a bargain.

all four of the plates looked like this until you look closer and could see the lumps of mushroom or the slightly darker gravy

It's always a good sign when I eat everything on my plate, including the salad (sans tomato that I traded away). The salad on this plate was very nice, with a light dressing that didn't clash with the gravy. I actually had most of my salad with some of the excess gravy on it and it was a very good plan.

The chips were right up there with the best. they were crisp on the outside, soft in the middle and just the perfect texture for me. Also it was great to see that they weren't plated up under the schnitzel, and between the 4 plates there was only a few cubes of stray cucumber hiding away under any of the schnitzels. The chips were so good I think I ate all of mine and half of one of the other diner's serves that wasn't able to eat all the chips.

The Schnitzel itself was perfectly cooked, with only a thin coating on the outside. The crumb had crisped up nicely in the frying process, but hadn't burned anywhere, and wasn't overdone. The meat inside was that perfect white colour, and still was succulent and juicy. All of this was fantastic dipped into the gravy.

The gravy itself was the only letdown of the whole plate, and it wasn't so much the gravy as the 'Mushroom Sauce', which lacked enough mushroom to be a chunky style sauce, and lacked the flavour from the mushrooms to carry it through the thinner style sauce. It really just needed more mushrooms in it, which seems a bit of a strange point to be skimping on when everything else was such good quality.

If you like pub schnitzels though, I'd highly recommend heading here on a Monday - Wednesday for lunch or dinner to get a great deal on a wonderful meal.

Thanks for dropping past. I've hit follow on you to see what you do. If you interact regularly in my comments, you'll likely get a few upvotes, as that's where many of mine go

Schnitzel. Shneetzel. Shneeeeeeeeeeeeeetzeeellllllll.

You probably needed to be out for lunch with @gorc and I that one time for that to make any sense whatsoever. We were making it very hard for the girl at the counter to keep a straight face while serving the customer before us XD

Those chips do look really good!

goatsig

Oh that makes total sense to me already, but then I already know you and @gorc, so I can totally imagine the scene. I also remember multiple dinners at various locations with you and others related to you. Wait staff have an interesting time when we're about :)
