The STEEM Engine Express: Episode 1

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone,

As you may know, I recently was involved in forming the brand new Steemit group The STEEM Engine! I've decided to try something new for the group and for me personally, so this is the first episode of a new podcast-like series I'll be doing to highlight some great posts from our group!

I'm also going to try to keep the posts three minutes or fewer so that you can get a quick idea of the types of posts that are being shared over in the STEEM Engine Discord server. If you'd like more information on our group and how to get your posts featured in this series, check out our group account @thesteemengine for more information!

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions for the podcast's future episodes!

I'm Ethan Smith, and this is the STEEM Engine Express

We begin this week with a post from @littlenewthings that likens participation on Steemit to choices made at a party. She explores several ways that your interactions on the platform have an impact on your rewards and relationships.

"Survive in Steemit- long term" is a fascinating look at how Steemit compares to other decisions we make outside the cyber world.

2018 is upon us, and Steemit has not been short of posts about the new year. But why does @sultnpapper tell us to throw out our new resolutions?
He begins by challenging our understanding of the word resolution and ends with a challenge to simply ask yourself, "Am I doing the best that I can?" A question that can apply to almost any situation.

The New Year's edition of "A Daily Dose of Sultnpapper" is entitled "Did you make a list of New Year’s Resolutions?... Throw it away now." I encourage you to read it as you may just find a bit of wisdom you weren't expecting.

It's been cold this week across the United States, but @tattoodjay reminded us of summer with his post "Beach Wednesday Missing summer." However, a post that begins with a lovely sunset photo ends by asking the classic question, "Why do weathermen still have jobs if they're wrong all the time?" Jay's thoughts resonate with many of us as we look ahead to more cold weather.

Tuesdays are for trees as it would seem, and @apanamamama delivered this week with some fantastic photos of the native trees in the region of Panama where she resides. Her post, "Pine Trees in Panama - Tree Tuesday" gives us an interesting look into the local foliage, reminding us that pine trees live alongside the many orange trees, eucalyptus trees, and banana plants that one may normally associate with Panama.

We end today with a look at Steem's use across the globe. STEEM Engine passenger @pennsif has been working to compile a growing list of businesses (both online and off) that accept STEEM as a form of payment. On the list you'll find a variety of businesses, including coffee shops, motorcycle repair, online arts and crafts, and travel. "SteemCommerce - Businesses accepting payment in steem (v 2 @ 3 January 2018)" is a great place to start if you're curious about what your STEEM can get you when you aren't online!

That's all for this episode. Hope you'll catch the next Express!

The STEEM Engine Express features five of the best posts curated by the STEEM Engine each week across the Steemit platform. The Express is produced by Ethan D. Smith exclusively for The STEEM Engine initiative on Steemit.com

I like the new idea, i really enjoy listening to podcasts. Great use of sound effects and music in the background. If you can figure out how to open the audio within the steemit platform you will grow the listener base. Great work though in the first episode, you've got a great voice for radio

Thanks, Jason. I decided to try DSound since it's similar to DTube, but I don't think I'll be using it for future podcasts. I'm going to try to come up with some sort of embeddable player in the post since your suggestion is a good one.

I really enjoyed collecting the music and sound effects for this post, so I might post a blog about how I found all of them too.

Thanks for taking the time to listen! I really appreciate it!

Excellent idea and well put together and presented

Thanks also for the mention

Great work

You're very welcome! Perhaps I'll include more of your posts in the future. Thank you for stopping by! I'm glad you enjoyed the podcast!

Glad to visit 😎👍

This is really cool! Thanks for including me along with some other great posts and a few I still need to check out! Sounds like you were having a lot of fun with it! :)

Oh yes, I had so much fun doing it. I'm already looking forward to getting the next one together. Finding the train sound clips was probably the most fun thing I did. I'll be doing a blog about that as well, I think. All of this was inspired by listening to NPR on my way home yesterday. haha I think this was probably one of the most fun blogs I've done on Steemit so far!

Thank you for your support!

:) Nice! It's always good to enjoy what you're doing. ;) Hopefully it didn't take too terribly long! It really is a good idea!

The part that took the longest was piecing together the intro. I think I'll do a post about where the sound bytes came from. Glad you think it's a good idea!

Excellent idea for the podcast.

How did you find DSound? I haven't tried it yet.

And thank you for including my post.

Thank you! I heard of DSound back when it launched. Someone I follow had resteemed their announcement post, so I checked it out. I had not gotten to use it yet, though, and I'm not the biggest fan since it doesn't work well with markdown when you add text to the description on Dsound's website. So I had to come over to Steemit and edit everything. I don't think I'll be using it in the future since I want to be able to include the transcript, but then again, I could just continue to edit it in.

I'm glad I got to include your post. It's neat to read about where STEEM is accepted around the world. Thank you for stopping by!

Awesome, can't wait to see more of these! (I'm more likely to be reading the transcripts than listening- I read super fast and have trouble paying attention to podcasts- but I still really like this idea!)

Thanks for this helpful feedback. I actually took attention span into consideration when recording this. I am going to try to keep my summaries to around three minutes, so I get more people listening to the whole thing. I'm glad you enjoyed having the transcript, though. I'll keep doing that for sure for people like you and people who have trouble loading the audio.

Glad to hear it! I know it's extra work, but I definitely appreciate the effort!

This is a super fun idea! Thanks again for all you do @ethandsmith

You're very welcome. Thank you for taking the time to stop by!

Absolutely love the idea Ethan, waiting for your new episodes. I don't know why but it didn't play the podcast on the website and I had to download it

Thank you

I have heard of other people having issues using DSound, so perhaps in the future I'll look for somewhere else to host them. Glad you were able to get the download to work! Thank you so much for stopping by to listen!

Great concept, @ethandsmith!

I've got pretty slow internet, and I was only able to hear the first 10 seconds of the mp3. It appeared to freeze, but I really couldn't tell if maybe it was buffering, or still loading. The DSound took forever to load to start with, and then gave me the recording in tiny bits, so I gave up. I'm pretty sure it was due to my connection, and not a problem with your recordings. So it's perfect that you have provided the transcripts!

I love what you are doing with this project! It's a great idea!

I have upvoted and resteemed this post. I found the link to this article on #thesteemengine.
Cheers!

No worries! I'm going to do my best to optimize the next one for a better listening experience. I know the mp3 link I included is around 8MB in size, so if you think that's doable, you could try downloading it.

I know others have had issues getting DSound to work, so I appreciate the feedback. I'm going to try to make this a much easier process in the future.

Glad you were able to read the transcripts! I decided that would be very helpful so that I could provide links to the posts I talk about. Thanks so much for the resteem!

You're welcome, @ethandsmith! I love it when audio shows also include transcripts because sometimes I can only read, and sometimes I can only listen (like while driving). It shows a thoughtful approach to providing one's content.
Cheers!

Wow, this is really well done. Maybe you can consider a career as a news anchor

I think I'm satisfied with Podcaster for now. Haha thanks, though! It's always good to get positive feedback. I hope my future episodes will be as fun to make as this one was.

Nice touch and a great voice, look forward to more of these in the future.

I really appreciate the kind words! I hope to have another one ready soon!
