Pine Trees in Panama - Tree Tuesday

in #nature7 years ago

When you think about Panama, do pine trees come to mind? Did you know that the area of Panama we live in is called Little Switzerland? In our neighborhood, pine trees live right next to orange trees, eucalyptus trees and banana plants. It really has a feel for the mountains here.

This is a pine tree that lives right next to the creek that runs through the neighborhood. It is pretty tall and drops a lot of pine needles on the road.

It has some moss growing on it, like everything else around here! When people come to the neighborhood, they always comment on the pine trees being right here next to the Rainbow Eucalyptus and other tropical plants!

Interesting - I traveled most countries in Central America (unfortunately with exception of Panama) but pine trees in the local context never came to my mind.

:) Oh man, you missed a good country! ;) I have hit a few other Central American countries through the years but I'd like to see some more of them some day. Thanks for stopping by!

First time (many years ago) I started from Canada/US and overland came as far as Costa Rica but as there was no sensible way to cross to Colombia I flew over Panama through San Andres to Bogota. Second time started from Guatemala and ended in Costa Rica - couldn't get return ticket from Panama to Europe so another miss. Hopefully third time I will succeed :-)

Sounds like a good plan to try again. :) There is still no road from Panama to Colombia. They haven't made one through the Darien and I doubt they ever will. The PanAmerican Highway ends right here in Panama. Stretches from North America all the way down to Panama.

I know. From Panama you have to take the boat to Colombia. It's a bit complicated :-)

I like what I see, especially like that

Thanks. It's a pretty tall tree.

haha! We have pine trees everywhere down here. In fact the little community where we live is called "Pine Forest"! It's green year round here. I love going away where the trees actually turn colors but so much can be done with pine trees and the things it produces!

I need to look into what can be done with pine trees I guess! :) We have a great Eucalyptus tree that I need to start using to its potential and some lemon grass. I need to figure out how else to use the plants we have here. Thanks for stopping by. Sounds like a nice area there! :)

the needles can be made into tea that has a lot of vitamins. The sap is antibacterial and can be used to help close up wounds. If you find rich lighter pine or what we call fat wood, it can be used to easily start fires.

Nice to know! I need to get a list going of what we have available.

It's funny how peoples ideas of a place they haven't visited are. I was surprised to find such lush landscapes in southern Spain, too, and never expected to see a pine forest there. It looks like Panama has quite the assortment of plant life, too.

Yes, different areas have different trees. My husband is hoping to plant a palm tree in our driveway. I'm not sure if it's warm enough for that here, but we will see. I have never seen a coconut tree in our area, but there are a ton as we get closer to the coast. I visited Spain in college, but I don't remember much about the landscape really... :)

That's pretty neat! I didn't know pine trees grew in Panama. There it is! @ironshield

You learn something new every day. ;) Pine trees aren't all over, but they do well in our neighborhood. We are supposed to have a low tonight of 49 in our town! Yikes!! That's pretty chilly for here. Most of the day it was 61 with a little rain where we live but in David (down the mountain), it was in the high 80s. Lots of variety!

Jacket weather one place, shorts a little further from there. Amazing. Here, it's lots of snow. Pretty to see it... out the window. @ironshield

The snow does sound pretty!! :) Yes, the microclimates here are pretty interesting.

Wow, its so green there! Now that im in the desert i miss all the greens lol..
Thanks for sharing! ;)

:) Glad you stopped by. It is green right now but still raining some. We are supposed to be in dry season and everything will turn brown until it starts to rain again in April, but it hasn't gotten completely dry yet! :)
