Survive in Steemit – long term

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Today as I have been talking to a friend in the #teammalaysia I am inspired to write something about Steemit.

Many new comers sees the successes of the seasoned Steem-ians and they are very excited and enthusiastic with it.

But then they become frustrated because they are not seeing the earning results as they would have hoped for. I can say, most people these days that has been hooked into the internet are less likely to have patience.

So from the inspiration, I have decided to write something that hopefully, it will truly inspire many more who will find this really useful.

So come journey with me, into the Steemit world, and how to survive it.

1. The grey line between Real Life and Cyber Life

Year after year as internet connection becomes faster and mobile phones become more powerful, the world right now is much closer than before.

So you technically cannot really mutually exclude the Real Life and Cyber Life anymore, in some ways.
But that doesn’t mean that you are doing everything in the Cyber Life, you just need to have a much better view point of that in the awesome Steemit platform, behind most accounts (except bots, I can tell you, there are MANY bots out there) and the keyboards, is a real human being.
They may be really far away from you, but they are still human beings and not “auto responders”.

2. Treat your fellow Steem-ians as real humans

Yes, they are REAL. Steemit Fest is already a proof that those people exist. Team Malaysia spear head leader @bitrocker2020 and @awsomianist has proven that there and there.

In fact, every single team Malaysia members who gathered recently, is REAL.

So when you start to swim in the vast ocean space, you got to treat them as humans, not just fishes that makes you rich. (Although newbies like us are called minnows and successors are called Whales)

Let's Visualise

Just as I have mentioned, you got to realise the grey line of Real and Cyber world (unless you plan to lead a double life), you need to know that you are interacting with humans

So when you log into Steemit and viewing posts, is just like you are walking into an open house party ; or maybe for kids, the start of the school.
(Make way for team Malaysia Juniors in the future!)

Each trending category could be a classroom for you, or maybe in the party, like the lounge.

Let’s continue with an adulterated scenario.

You have options to choose:

  • Make friends,
  • or get laid (PG13. Ahem)

So if you want to get laid , meaning in the Steemit world you only emphasise about cashing out. You are less likely going to care the people in the party , as long as someone is there to give you benefits of getting laid (one night stand for PG13) you are happy.

So when you are looking into the Steemit context, you will see these sorts of Steem-ians who will just keep spamming either low quality content or plagiarize other people’s work.

You don’t really care what you post. As long you get paid, you are done.

These are shallow people. Mostly they either get wasted or just never comes back to the party.

HOWEVER

If you are eyeing of maybe make good friends or actually (for young and hot blooded people), looking for a mate of your life (yes, I have friends who did that before, and some succeed) your approach will be VERY DIFFERENT.

You start noticing like-minded individual who shares your common point of view, hobbies, or even passion. You’d probably mingle from one group to another in the entire party, until you actually meet someone who you can catch a good conversation with; be it plain jokes or even deep debates.

You’d probably will stay in touch with these people even after the party.

So just like in the Steemit world, you’d probably will look into topics you actually like to read and you start commenting on their posts. You might not get an immediate reply (if they are not 24/7 on Steemit), but most like you will get a reply one day or another (or some maybe weeks later if they are travelling).

Eventually, you started following that writer, and vice versa.

And from there, you create friendships, bond with them, and maybe, even meet up with them in real life outside Steemit.

Wait, so what if you can’t find people who you really can relate to in the party?

Can’t find a miracle, be the miracle.

Inspired by Nick Vujicic

These are usually the movers and shakers, in cyber world or even in the real world. They usually will eventually be noticed for their unique sense of things because they are usually extrovert individuals.
However I have personally seen introverts in real life are actually more outspoken in the cyber world, and you will be surprised, they actually could write much more than you imagine.

Wait, how about those trending ones?

Remember all those TV series, movies and real life about “famous people” in school or in parties?

You don’t TRY to approach them just for the sake of meeting them (like those stalking friends), they will smell you from a mile away. Most of these people in the real life may actually entertain you once a while, but they would hardly take notice of you unless you are exceptionally unique, or their lap dog in the future.

Most of these people will have an alpha sense of characteristics and if you yield to this sort of people in your own free will, well, don’t put your hopes too high that they will treat you in par in the future.

So in the Steemit world, there are some arse holes (pardon my language) just as in the real world, but so far, by the Grace of God, I have seen 90% of these high and mighty individuals (mostly whales) are actually really cool people who worked their way up hard and are the humble, well balanced individuals.

These nice people in Steemit who are whales now are probably the pioneers of this amazing platform, when they don't care and steem on when SBD and STEEM were valued below $1.

But just because they are nice people, please don’t suck up to them like a moron.
Don't make them into bullies. Power corrupts the mind. Even the most honourable ones

They appreciate people who have their own decent dignity; and I know they will appreciate that unique you just as much as you appreciate their real character.

Thank you so much! You guys made my day!

So my advice for newbies, minnows, after being more than 6 months in Steemit and just realised that I have CROSSED the 500 followers threshold, follow Jesus’ golden rule:

Do to others as you would like them to do to you.
Luke 6:31

And don’t treat Steemit as a place to get laid . You do not know how huge its potential is!

Thank you to my fellow steemian from #teammalaysia who has asked me such a question that you have inspired me to write a whole article of it.

Thank You for Your Time

I hope you have enjoyed this inspired writing as much as I have enjoyed preparing it.

I agree with you on the 2. Treat your fellow Steem-ians as real humans. A lot of blogger use terms that they preferred, and they forget about their readers. Always proof read your post before you post, that's what I learn from blogging on steemit in the past 2 weeks.

Yes, exactly. Whenever I write a post I try to visualise it as if I am talking to a person in real life. That actually helps paint a better perspective for readers when they try to get into my head through my post.

This also creates a special bond with the readers that they matter .

Thank you so much for making time and visiting and commenting this post. Appreciate your input!

I am on the road of learning to blog. I had never blog that much as what I had done in this 2 weeks.

haha. It can be addicting, but at the same time, frustrating when you have nothing to write about.

Agree, what I did when I run out of ideas, I blog what I learn from reading docs, watching tutorial videos.

That is a good start. Be inspired with what you have learned and project it out in your writing.

so called "revision" to re-enforce your memory on that

Very good revision! I must practice this more often!

Awesome! This is what we were talking about just now! @bitrocker2020 @karinzdailygrind @joannewong @aaronleang

Haha. See? Though I am not physically there, in spirit, I am with you all. LOL.

We are all connected !

That's the whole idea right? hehehe Get connected and stay connected in Steemit.

Exactly. Now you finally get the better idea of it @kokuryo!

We are indeed connected! :D

It would never cross my mind to compare Steemit as the party place where some people arrive to make friends, share their knowledge, give something to others or even the whole community while some others are just looking for the opportunity to "get laid."

Unfortunately, it turns out to be very true and good comparison!

But just the same as in a real life and for the long run, the majority of the people don't like the idea being a catch or even a victim of those "get laid" hunters. Same applies here!

Those "just to get laid" or "get-rich-quick-scheme" hunters in most cases are recognized very fast, especially from seasoned Steem-ians! The reason why is very simple. They have seen hundreds if not thousands of the same or similar ones before. As you said, they can smell them from the far distance, no matter how well they think they have disguised themselves.

The same applies vice versa! Every new member with sincere good intentions would be recognized the same way as it would be in real life - through its actions!

Exactly.

I just hope when people look at Steem-ians as humans and not use them, then things will be so much better and I know everyone will earn much faster together. It is a win-win situation and not a dog-eat-dog real world.

Yes, we are judged by the fruits of our actions.

Thank you so much for your valuable input!

This is a good read for those people that I introduced steemit to and expected to earn hundreds of dollars on their first post. I told them that even selling durian, that durian need some times for the reputations to be built first, for people to like it and buy it.

I'll show this post to them next time I meet them :)

The durian analogy. haha. Only South East Asians will know and appreciate it, especially Malaysians.

It is great that you keep the post and share with them. And I am happy this post is useful for you.

Thank you so much for your time

Not everyone loves Musang King or D24 or any other type of Durian and not everyone loves durian... So it is not the $$$ that we must focus on, but really rather the content and the social part we must put the effort in. Then $$$ will follow later. The good content and good engagement with others must always be together. Without either one, nothing will happen.

A great post and agree with you on all points but especially on Treat your fellow Steem-ians as real humans
I like to look as Steemit as a community of friends and treat people as I would like to be treated,

Yes. Especially when you meet up with them in real person. It is important to have that humanity relation among one another once again. Even in real life, in the same office or neighbours, people are cold to each other. And that usually happens because they are so used to treating others (in accounts) in the cyber world forgetting they are humans.

And for #teammalaysia , we have catapulted the idea of cultivating a strong bond with fellow countrymen (and steem-ian foreigners who are staying in Malaysia) not only for just supporting each other posts, but really rebuild the meaning of being in a community.

I hope your area will one day be that too.

Thank you so much for your time!

We are REAL! LOL...

Yes indeed and on here people see that not so much on other social sites

Well said @littlenewthings. That's some good advice! So often we separate our cyber-life and our real life. Sometimes it's helpful to take cyberbreaks sometimes (and not just for sleeping). As valuable are cyber-relations are, releationships in "real-life" are always a priority. Even the best cyber-relations eventually become "real-life".

The "get-laid" analogy certainly makes the point. We tend to sometimes say things with our keyboard that we would never say with our mouth - for better or for worse.

My favorite quote:

So when you start to swim in the vast ocean space, you got to treat them as humans, not just fishes that makes you rich.

@ironshield

That is so right @ironshield . We just really must start treating others with dignity. Look at the era of smart phones, and how the human relations is turning into.

There are many rules but indeed, we need to treat Steemit account as if there is a person behind.

We may be interacting online but we should respect the people on the other side of the line :)

I believe that the majority accounts here are still breathing living humans and not bots.
So we really should take notice of that so that we still retain that human connection courtesy towards one another.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Really well said :)

Keep steem'in hard XD

I like building good relationships and friendship. My Steemit journey has been awesome because of getting to know so many uniquely amazing individuals.

That is such a great testimony @zord189 ! This was what #teammalaysia envisioned I believe.

Well, at least, this is what I want it to be achieved.

Thanks so much for such a great sharing!

Glad to have met you here in Steemit and looking forward to having my girls meet their Uncle Isaac too! So they know Uncle Isaac is REAL!

Yes! Very Real indeed! lol

Hahaha.. Just as real as Jessicca yi yi

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

You can see your post's place along the track here: The Daily Whistle Stops, Issue #8 (1/5/18)

The STEEM Engine is an initiative dedicated to promoting meaningful engagement across Steemit. Find out more about us and join us today!

What a great read. I like how you aligned cashing out like a one night stand. Veey funny yet quite apt. I'll give you a follow and havw a look at your new stuff as it arrives.happy 2018.

Haha, I am so glad you liked that analogy! Almost every single person who I talk to about Steemit and they only talk about cash out or how desperate vote and visit begging becomes and how they justify that this is a "money tree" platform, I couldn't help but staring at them and see the similarities of a desperate hot blooded young individual who needs to get "released" quickly.

Or the friends with benefits type, if you know what I mean.

haha...

This world has come to a point that it is so shallow that almost everything is a touch and go situation no wonder humanity is so cold and uncaring.

Hope that this will lead to change of mind of many steemians here (got gets to read this post) and make the change and see how many great things (besides surviving in Steemit) are installed for them!

Thank you so much for your time!
