"Don't Blow To 'ard!" - Stealth Water Methanol Injection - [SH2OMI] - Update 16.03.2018
Hello Steem Meisters,
For those of you following the SH2OMI project, you'll be aware of the 'explosive failure' of the silicone tubing between the pump and the solenoid valve from a few days ago. Well, the repair and upgraded pipework seems to be holding well but I've still had that little niggle in the back of my mind that this replacement PVC tubing might be at it's pressure limits and might decide to 'blow' once the unit is tucked away under the scuttle and swamp the cabin ventilation fan unit with water; not a good outcome :(
So while the construction of the project is current on hold as 'The Beast From The East 2.0' is heading our way, I thought I'd trawl the interwebs for any burst pressure data for this PVC tubing/pipe. I headed to the B&Q website first as that was where I sourced the tubing from but I found no data. The best sources for information was from the USA but I had to convert metric to imperial measurements first. My tubing is 11mm OD, 8mm ID (1.5mm wall) clear unreinforced PVC tubing which converts to the following in inches:
I then found two independent companies with these dimensions for clear unreinforced PVC tubing and they both stated the same working pressure of 50psi. My pump is rated to 80psi though, that's 30psi over these manufacturers safe working pressure limit.
Working pressure is all well and good but how do they determine the safe 'working pressure' limit? I suspect different manufacturers might use varied calculations to determine such a figure based on the ultimate 'burst pressure'. Thankfully, a quick look further down the page of the second web site revealed this little nugget of information.
So with a factor of 4:1, it seems this particular tubing will burst at a pressure of 200psi, giving me (hopefully) a safety margin of 120psi.
Would you guys in the Steemit community deem that a sufficient margin to play with?
I'd love your thoughts on my findings folks.
