I Did A Boo Boo :( - Stealth Water Methanol Injection - [SH2OMI] - Update 9.03.2018

Hello Steem Meisters,

For every two steps forward we have to accept the odd one step back. Before I get into the crux of this particular post, can I just ask you guys if the following is normal?

I've removed the rubber intake manifold pipe as I had a thought (which I will get to shortly) but on inspection there seems to be an oily residue inside the throttle body and the lower intake plastic pipe. On the inside of the rubber intake pipe itself, the oily residue has lumpy/gritty debris in it.

I wiped the inside of these three components on this towel and found this amount of dirty, oily residue. Top Left is from inside rubber pipe, Top Right is from throttle body and Middle is from lower plastic intake pipe.

So guys, is this normal? The spare rubber pipe that I've modified with the fittings was dirty to when it arrived but I don't remember it being THIS dirty. I'm hoping for words of comfort folks,....... don't tell me it's owt catastrophic please :)

Any hoo, back to the main topic here...

As briefly stated above, I removed the pipe because I had a thought:
"Did idiot EggMeister mount the misting connector bulkhead too low in the rubber pipe so that it would interfere with the flange on the lower plastic pipe?"

Yup, I had :(

The amount of space required from the lower lip of the rubber to the hex/nut section of the bulkhead connector would need a minimum of 29mm. What I had done though several weeks ago was to mark this rough distance for the drilling point on the rubber pipe. Obviously, this would be the centre point for the 6mm pushfit hose/bulkhead connector and forgot to take into account the extra space required for the hex/nut portion of the fitting. Did that make sense folks? Basically, I forgot to 'measure twice, cut once' as the saying goes.

The measurement from the hex/nut to the edge of rubber pipe is roughly 24mm (see below image), 5-6mm shy of what it needs to be for clearance. Ergo, the modified rubber pipe won't fully fit onto the lower plastic intake pipe.

So I've no choice now but to order a new VW CAYC specification rubber intake pipe (Part no. 6R0145828) and start again with the boost and misting nozzle/bulkhead placements. I had 'thread-locked' those fittings and so removal from the now useless rubber pipe was fun indeed. I spent several minutes painstakingly removing all traces of the thread-lock from the components so I can re-use them on the new pipe when it arrives. Just to be 'safe' though, I've ordered a new 90 degree 6mm pushfit bulkhead connector and a brass boost bulkhead hose connector from the interwebs.

So folks, a bit of a delay now until the part(s) arrive. In total, I think I've 'wasted' over £100 in wrong or self-damaged parts now. I already wrongly drilled the first pipe as I was hastily wanting to get the process rolling before I had even taken any measurements and also several slightly incorrect or wrong-sized connectors/fittings. Still, that's the price of development I suppose.

So watch this space folks and I'll update when something new happens :) btw, you may be aware that Dtube doesn't seem to like my recent uploaded files and so just in case you missed it, you can view the last SH2OMI post video over on YouTube.

Bye for now,

EggMeister

Residue is normal on a turbo charged car, especially a modified one. They generally call it "blow by" Time to get yourself an oil catch can. :)

Hi @nelkeljdm, thanks for clearing that up :)

I was in a little bit of a panic because the other day I was racing an Audi TT (TFSI, what engine/power that is) off the lights...... well, he didn't know he was racing until I bolted from the lights up the dual-lane slip road onto the motorway LOL. As I looked back at the junction to where Mr Audi was, I saw the remains of a big cloud of blue smoke and immediately thought I was the culprit. After thinking about it, there was a lorry behind me with a side venting exhaust so I'm hoping the smoke came from him.

Any hoo, thanks again bud.

btw, I've just uploaded another SH2OMI post today. Another step back in the project unfortunately :(
