Attention to the fake Adobe Flash updates. Security researchers at Palo Alto Networks have discovered a hacking campaign that uses these installers as Trojan horse to install a mining software. For the user who has inadvertently downloaded this corrupted update, it is not easy to notice this trickery.

Indeed, the installation of Adobe Flash’s new version takes almost place normally, with the same messages and the same pop-up windows as the legitimate installation software. And in the end, new version of Adobe Flash is installed.

The only moment the user can have a doubt is when Windows asks him if it is necessary to execute this file resulting from an "unknown publisher". But the message of this alert is not necessarily enough to change your mind. Note that this test was made on a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 computer. It is possible that a computer under Windows 10 is more efficient at the detection.

In the side of Adobe Flash, the Trojan will also install XMRig, a crypto mining software. This one will connect almost immediately to a mining pool and to begin the calculation to generate the cryptocurrency. The infected post could also connect itself to other hackers’ servers to download and to install malwares.

Palo Alto Networks researchers do not know how many users have been infected by these vicious installers, nor how they are disseminated to victims.

On the other hand, they have detected not less than 113 copies of this Trojan horse in diverse viral databases since March 2018. Proof that this campaign is very active.

We must therefore remain careful and download especially software and updates only with a trusted source.
