Food Adventures #12 | The Mirrors Thai Restaurant | Huge, delicious feast!

Join me & Ben for a delicious Food Adventure to The Mirrors Thai Restaurant in Palm Beach, Gold Coast!

This restaurant just opened a few weeks ago and is owned and operated by our friend's family. Our friend's mum (I just call her Aunty) has been in the restaurant business for around 30 years and definitely knows how to cook up authentic Thai cuisine. So we decided to head down to the restaurant to feast ourselves on Saturday night that just passed.

We didn't even have a look at the menu - we just told Aunty what we felt like eating and she cooked up a range of delicious food for us to try. So, I don't actually know the proper names of some dishes but I'll try my best to describe them to you so you can try and imagine just how delicious everything tasted.

If you live on the Gold Coast (Australia) or are here on holidays and you love Thai food - I highly recommend trying this hidden gem of a restaurant. Aunty's food is seriously to-die-for and you will feel like you are eating food straight from the streets of Bangkok.

Hidden Gem down the short alleyway

The Mirrors Thai restaurant is hidden away at the end of a short alleyway just off the main street. The signage isn't that obvious but lucky our friend showed us exactly where it was. The interior is all newly decorated and is very cute. The lighting inside the restaurant was a bit dim so I apologize in advance for the low light in most of the pictures.

Each table and place setting was completed with a napkin lotus flower and an overturned gold cup in the centre for drinking water. We even had a little origami demo and learnt how to make these cute lotus flowers out of napkins. It's actually much easier than it looks.

Let the feast begin! Entrees & the best curry puffs in the world (IMO)

One of the best foods that Aunty makes that I have always loved to eat are her Curry Puffs. They are crispy and fluffy pillows filled with delicious curried potato and meaty goodness. The Spring Rolls were also really delicious and both made for the perfect start to our meal.

We were also served Tom Sab, a spicy pork rib soup. Similar but slightly different to the famous Tom Yum Soup. It had more of a peppery taste but less sour. Either way, I was more than happy to try a new soup and my stomach was very happy after finishing our entrees.

In my opinion, no Thai feast is complete without the classic Green Papaya Salad with added prawns for good measure. The balance of spicy, sweet and sour flavours was perfect and deliciously refreshing.

Mains - food, food and more food! It just kept coming!

The food just kept on coming from the kitchen, which made my stomach really, really happy, but I knew that we were not going to be able to finish everything. There were 5 of us eating this feast and we were served 1 whole fish, 2 meat dishes, 2 noodle dishes along with sticky rice and steamed white rice. So I'll start from the beginning and take you through all the dishes.

Eating Nemo (Not really Nemo)

The star of the show was the Chilli Paste Whole Fried Fish that was cooked to perfection. Aunty already pre-cut all the fish from the backbone and fried each piece, which made it really easy for us to devour and also allowed the delicious chilli paste to coat each piece. I usually have steamed whole fish (when I am lucky enough to eat whole fish) so this was a nice change and although it was fried, it was still tender and moist inside.

Oodles of Noodles

I absolutely love noodle dishes and the classic Pad Thai is no exception. It's just one of those go-to dishes that you just have to have from time to time. The next noodle dish was Pad Kee Mao, otherwise known as Thai Drunken Noodles as they're apparently great while drinking alcohol or recovering from a hangover.

This was the first time Ben & I have tried Pad Kee Mao, but it is a serious contender to the typical Pad Thai. The dish uses thicker rice noodles (compared to Pad Thai) and is stir-fried together with Holy Basil, and is sweeter and much, much spicier. If you're looking for a change-up in your usual Thai noodle order, I can vouge for this dish! Give it a try!

Two Little Pigs (We only had 2 pork dishes)

As per our request, Aunty served up her delicious Dry Red Curry Pork - perfect with a helping of sticky rice. This dish might not look like much but it really packs a punch in terms of spice and flavour. I think Aunty knew we would suffer from the spiciness of this dish so she also made up a non-spicy pork dish that I don't know the proper name to.

Lots of food & plenty of leftovers

Needless to say, we weren't able to finish everything between the 5 of us but we were all happy and very full by the end of the night. We all had leftovers to take home for lunch the next day, which is always a plus.

Everything from start to finish was absolutely delicious and I can't recommend it enough. It is a bit of a drive for us to get to Palm Beach (1.5 hours from our house) but it was well worth the food coma. Next time we're craving Thai we will probably bring our families with us to enjoy another Thai feast.

Thank you Aunty! We will be back again!

Thank you for joining Ben & myself for another Food Adventure! I hope you feel like eating Thai food now! See you for our next Foodie Post.
