Mini Motivation #88 - The Scheduled Mourning

in #psychology6 years ago

In her book, best selling author of Thick Face Black Heart, Chin-Ning Chu, speaks about a time when she was living in China as she was pursuing her studies.

One of the relatives of the landlord had passed away, and in that village, it's a tradition that the death be mourned for few weeks. So everyday from 2pm to 4pm, many visitors would come to the living room, and they would start crying.

The sobs were real, as they recalled what the deeds of the deceased, and the massive contribution he had done in his life. Close friends and family member would share their life stories, shared experiences with him, the lessons learned from him, as they mourned as a group.

As she observed them doing this everyday, the author initially was touched. Until half way through the weeks, she started noticing the heart-warming gesture has turned into one with quite an odd behaviour. Visitors would be chatting and laughing a way a few minutes before 2 o'clock, and the moment the clock struck two, at a snap of an imaginary finger, they would start crying.

The author also noticed that over time, the crying became less intense, and just like how it started, at 4pm sharp, the crying would stop, and they sometimes would resume their laughter.

When I first read the story, I, too, found the scenario very funny. No disrespect to the dead, but how can you mourn for a specific time of the day, interrupting your daily routine, only to resume whatever you were doing sharp on the dot?

And then I realized that it's tradition, it's how things had always been done, and we sometimes disguised the routine as a form of respect, hiding behind the act, instead of questioning it. As an Asian, I grew up with many of such traditions - though not to such an extreme - and I had always been taught to separate rituals from committed acts. The latter requiring me to discern and uncover the reasons of the practice, doubting the intensions, before deciding if it was worth practicing.

It had never been easy, because to the elderly, I wasn't respecting traditions, and was nagged for it. But I had always asked if they could explain why they did what they did. In most cases, they couldn't, and just said it has always been the case, and they were just following what their elders had done.

What about you? Do you struggle with traditions that you question?

Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3-minute reads.

From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.

Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.

Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)

Stay awesome!

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

Oh boy! If I got a dollar for every tradition I broke I'd be sitting sipping coconut shakes on my own island.

The Indians are known for their traditions, dating it back a several thousand years just to rub things in....and then add variety to each different region it comes from.

Something as simple as how you place your kumkuma to the design of a Thali...etc etc.

Now, Hinduism is not a religion, much like Yoga....and the scriptures....it's a science.

A science which over the years got diluted and misunderstood to the point where it became blind tradition.

Yes, the kumkuma is made of particular herbs, touches a certain meridian point....but to restrict unmarried women or widows....that's just silly.

Or how a manthra is taught.....the psychology behind it. But to limit it to Brahmins....sigh

I could go on for hours. ..but tomorrow is New Years for us....what does it mean to me....I guess symbolically a fresh start, the science of the unseen energetics when harnessed with wisdom....just gives us a little extra umph psychologically, but mostly because we observe so very few things at home...it means a lot to my mother... And especially since my father passed just around this time....I just make it a point to slow down to just enjoy a little family time. ;)

I Guess, to each her own eh.

It find that it's funny how Chinese and Indian have quite a few similarities. One, both have one of the longest recorded history, and two both have the most traditions, haha.

Oh my goodness tell me about it. Lol!

In the jewish religion there are a lot of traditions taken out of context, many different foods you can't eat for example and when you ask for explanations the answer is " that is what is written"

Oh man, that's like the worst! Because there's just proper understanding to the action at all.

Interestingly, when I was younger, I would get into debates on these. And when the elders have nothing to retaliate with, they will say something like "yeah, you young generation, think you know better that you've gone to school?" My reply was "Would it be ok if I don't go?"

Just curious @eugenekul, would those food restrictions have made sense historically?

Like for health purposes or economic ?

I agree, some traditions should be let go, but certainly not all. Some are worth rediscovering
