Mini Motivation #83 - Battling Pre-judgements

in #psychology8 years ago

Like it or not, as much as we know we're not supposed to, we will judge others from time to time. Psychologists say it's a form of habitual behavior built based on our past observations and experiences, and also in a way, to protect us from harm.

Just like how we would be fearful of fire after being burned, subconsciously, we may have pre-judgments against another profession, gender, race, a person's age and background, etc, based on our past dealing with them.

"Oh, he's too young to be a CEO."

"Can you trust a [insert race here] salesman?"

"She's a woman. You think she can really make a good decision in this crisis?"

Sounds familiar? Guilty of them? I know I have, and sometimes, I still do.

We may not say it out, but sometimes those thoughts pop into our minds faster than we can put more effort to catch them. Worse is when we blurted it out and regret after that.

A good way to rewire your unconscious thinking patterns, is to debunk those pre-judgments you have. Ask yourself questions like:

  • Have it always been the case? Were there times when the statements weren't true?
  • What was the person's intention for doing this? Could there be a positive reason for it that I'm missing?
  • What pre-judgements others would have on me? How would I honestly feel about it?

Yes, it's not as easy process, and it requires a lot of self-reflectionon. The alternative is to become a victim of such pre-judgements yourself, so you'll know how it feels like to be at the receiving end of a judgement. However, that's emotional and you may become defensive, limiting the learning opportunities for yourself.

What about you? You have any effective ways to tackle this issue?

Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3-minute reads.

From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.

Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.

Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)

Stay awesome!

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:

  • Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
  • Upvote (like) other people contents
  • Comment on other people's posts
  • Have discussions, share opinions etc!

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

Guilty as charged... It is a thin line between judgement and opinion... so it's easy to crossover if you are not consciously making an effort keeping emotions in check.... IMHO

Throw in our bad past experiences, defensiveness, "principles" and ego, and we get all the justifications we need to sway our Pre-judgements into valued opinions.

hahaha.... ouch... but point taken....

I @danur upvote your post @maverickfoo. I as a small fish always follow the big fish posts to build my cooperation with them. and I hope that those who are already big want to visit my blog anytime. hopefully I am part of their project. thanks

Humans are emotional beings. Rather than masking our thoughts as 'rational' and forcing ourselves to abide by the right things, it's better to accept our flaws in our emotions and learn to process our feelings honestly so that we can really change our perspective of a certain moment, experience, person, place etc.

Could it be a case of animal instinct, a way of self-preservation? The animal will judge so it can decide to stay and fight or flight.

In any case, it is human nature to judge, no matter what people say. I don't believe that there are people who don't judge. I believe when people say they don't judge, what they meant was they judged and are able to accept what they perceived.

I think for a lot of people, myself included, jumping to conclusions tend to be our default mode. What's important is to keep in mind that with all our judgments, it is possible to be wrong. So, unless we can definitively prove our judgments to be correct, we should not act on them and avoid sharing them with others. Otherwise, we'll just prove ourselves to be judgmental and a gossip. Something, which is much worse.
