Mini Motivation #74 - Committing Without a Safety Net

in #psychology7 years ago

I’ll start with a confession.

When I started the Mini Motivation series - one morning post of roughly 300 words everyday, done within the first 21 minutes of waking up - I wrote an extra piece, just in case there was a day when I wake up, and for whatever reason, I couldn’t write.

Lack of ideas, late, overcommitment, or, as much as I hate to say this, Picky Writer’s Block (if you’d been to any of my Steemit Bootcamps, I would say Writer’s Block is BS, because everyone can write. It’s just a matter if it’s good shit, or bad shit. Hence’s the pickiness).

So I had kept it for a couple of months (I wrote my spare somewhere around the first week of the challenge), and I had to post it yesterday because I woke up late. Work was crazy too and I had been up late at night for a few weeks, plus I was going through some personal stuff, and it just came tumbling down in the form of totally missing my alarm clocks.

After I posted yesterday, I was hesitant to write another backup piece, because for the longest time, I struggled to not use it. Yup, there were many occasions when I woke up tired (usually a result of 3 hours sleeps) and I just feel like giving up for that day, and want to just use the backup piece. But on those numerous occasions, I decided to push on.

Then I realised that having a backup piece - a safety net - though gave me a sense of assurance, had also been a cripple to my commitment. I know I can just give up for one day (like yesterday morning), and still have an entire day to catch up, but that essentially meant me breaking my streak.

So here on out, I add another criteria to my “morning journal” challenge - no safety net, no backup posts. It’s now or never.

How would it turn out? Frankly you gotta stay tune and see how long the streak lasts.

I also started thinking, in what other areas of my life where I have created a safely net, and became more courageous because of that? Business? Career? Finances? Relationships? In some areas, it makes sense to have one, but important aspects of my life, like relationships, do I really need one?

What do you think? What are your “safety nets”, and how do you justify having and keeping them?

Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3-minute reads.

From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.

Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.

Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)

Stay awesome!

Wait, why's Mav posting on Steemit nowadays?

Well, unlike other blogging and social media platform, Steemit is the only platform that allows me to earn cryptocurrency when I engage with it. Yup, one Steem is about USD5, and you, too, can earn Steem Dollars every time you:

  • Create content (articles, blog posts, podcasts, videos, photos)
  • Upvote (like) other people contents
  • Comment on other people's posts
  • Have discussions, share opinions etc!

Yup, basically it's the very same thing you're doing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc all along!

The only difference? For once you can earn a nice income on the side!

Sign up for a free Steemit account, and you can thank me by coming back and upvoting this article. And guess what, you will earn Steem too for doing that! #awesome

Giving up on the saftey net is hard, even a little counter intuitive but it gives great strength, focus and clarity. It's great that you're giving it up, you are truly brave.

Just like riding a bike, I think in the beginning, have the safety wheels (net) is good. After that, training wheels gotta come off :)

Everyone likes the comfort of knowing that if they should fall or fail, they would have another option waiting that could ride them over until they are back on their feet. This is not a bad thing but it makes you lax in your function, and there will be a time when you will use that safety net and because you are used to that assurance, you won't be able to go impromptu, to improvise, to just do it with a concept of its reception.

Everyone though has what works for them. I discard pieces of writing a lot. Most times when I write, I edit and I immediately post. If I leave a piece of writing whether poetry, prose or an article, for a day, I might not like it the next day and in the process of editing it to make it fit my new vision, I spoil it. So I write, I post and let tomorrow take care of itself.

As a result, there are days I post like three times and there are days I post just once but I always post something. 😂

Looks like you're going with the flow, bro, which is great! Writing is a very creative and intuitive process.

Yeah it can be difficult at times @maverickfoo. Last night I wrote a post in my phone with the intention of posting it immediately and I slept off with the phone in my hand. I had to post it early this morning. This meant that I posted only once yesterday. It is fun though. Thanks
