Rockhounding at work this past week

in #rockhound6 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians! While I have been a little preoccupied with work for the last two weeks, I could not help but keep my eyes to the ground every time I walked over some rocks. So this morning I want to share a picture of each of the agates I found. They aren't very big so I didn't want to get into too much detail so instead of sharing just one rock like I normally do, I've got a handful of little ones. I think I will pick my favorite one and take detailed pictures of it.

Found a Marble

Let's begin with something that I consider a super rare find! A marble! This was not just a rare find for me, but I was not even looking for rocks or agates when I found it. I was actually digging near the edge of a building with a spaded shovel, getting the dirt buildup off the wall because we were getting ready to paint it. Which makes me wish I had documented the process but I'm typically so busy at work that it doesn't cross my mind to snap pictures. (I'd have to use my phone and not my Nikon, so the pictures wouldn't even be of high quality)

So as I was digging and moving some dirt and rocks, this shiny, wet object that looked like a dead bug at first glance caught my eye. I wasn't sure what it was so I flicked it with my finger to get it out of the dirt and it was a marble! I'm not much of a marble collector myself, but I do know that there are expensive marbles out there. I've also heard that there was a manufacturer of marbles here in Duluth and that there are many marbles that have been dumped in the bay. I'm not 100% sure about this though, and I can't seem to find the right search criteria for what I'm trying to find. Will need to do some digging on Duluth history if I wanted to know more.

The Agates

Besides the marble, I did find a bunch of interesting rocks and agates, and I would like to start with the little agates and lead up to the more interesting rocks. Of course, even the agates are interesting to me, they're kind of small so when it comes to my bigger finds, it's really no big deal but it was certainly difficult not bending down and grabbing them as I spotted them.

Let's start with some raw finds! One day I had to get to work 30 minutes early so I brought my Nikon with me and did a little bit of rockhounding while I waited to get started. I only found two little ones but I was happy to snag a picture of them as I found'em! Think you can spot it before you move to the next picture? These are easy to spot!

Here's the other one and it was like a football! As I've mentioned before, I love finding round or football shaped agates!

The rest of the pictures I took on my counter since I never had time to snag a picture while I was working. Just the time to squat and grab it! There were a few times that one of my co-workers would ask me -- "Agate?" Me: "Yep, nice one!". I can't imagine they are much of rockhounds, because they never asked me to see it. Since they were small, I didn't care much to show them since we were preoccupied with work.

The Others

There were a few rocks that I found that weren't agates but I found interesting!

Don't know what this is

I can tell that the veins within are quartz because it glows with the flashlight (just the quartz part) but I think that the rest of the rock is probably clay or mixtures of some other rock. I can say that I am not very good at identifying minerals that aren't gemstones.

Lavarock

I do believe this is a lavarock! I showed this along with a few above in a post last week but it was all in one group as opposed to a closeup. After finding the marble, I wanted to make a full post of it! I've seen a variety of lavarocks and to be honest I'm not sure if this is one but I do believe so. There's a lot of these around here too!

A Fossilized Beehive?

This was a super weird find for me. It's hard like a rock but it's super light-weight. I really think it's a fossilized beehive. Maybe not even fully fossilized because I feel that I can crush it easily, I also wouldn't expect a fossilized beehive to be very strong. Can beehives even fossilize? Whatever it is, I liked it so I grabbed it!

Super Dark Smokey Quartz

This was a weird find for me. At first I thought it was a broken piece of glass. To be honest, I still think that's what it is, but when I put it under the flash light I see the characteristics of a Smokey Quartz. Great finds for working! So while I am essentially getting paid to work out, I am also getting paid to find agates. (Okay, maybe not getting paid to find agates, but it's certainly hard not to get distracted by all the rocks on the ground!)

Pictures before work

I love my new Nikon and I could not help but take pictures of this site while I was working. The building is being refurbished and I've been doing some of the refurbishing. Even though it's been hard work, I've enjoyed helping fix up what is considered an area with a lot of history. The building used to be the Lake Superior Fishing Company and you could come here and buy fresh fish. Although that they had recently moved locations, I've always thought that this site was abandoned. Having been purchased by my new boss, it's been quite a treat getting a peak inside. Even though I don't want to work this job anymore, I plan on taking advantage of getting pictures inside while I can. The little strip of rocks between the street and the water is where I found most of the agates. Lava rock and smokey quartz was around the corner to the left along the railroad tracks.

Very old and very industrial! Lots going on too with construction on the silo's just down the slip. Could be a prime location for future business if this area gets cleaned up. The bridge you see is the Blatnik Bridge (also called The High Bridge) that leads to Duluth, MN.

Here's a picture of the blatnik bridge at night that I shared this past winter, and I felt it proper to share it again here!

This was really fun to read, you found some really pretty stuff. I’m pretty sure the black porous one is also a lava rock. My uncle was a geologist and if I’m remembering his “rock talks” correctly those holes are made by gas bubbles when things cool quickly! They were my favorite as a kid because of their texture and because, as you pointed out, they’re so deceptively light!

Thanks I'm glad you liked it! I've seen some of the lavarocks you speak of and they don't quite look like it but you might be right. If it is a lavarock, it's certainly not like any other one I have found around here.

Nice agates, my wife and I like to walk along our beach looking for agates, here one of mine from last year, a nice small marble sized and shaped one.

Finding the almost round ones are not that easy.

I love finding the round ones but they are hard to find. I have a tin jar where I put all the round agates. Don't have many yet but the collection continues to grow.

I was a lucky day, found that one and a bright yellow one. We don't get very many big agates on our beach, the biggest ever was at most palm sized and flat slab, but tons of the small bright ones.
