she thought about him as she thought about serial killers or sociopaths; fascinating, alluring, dangerous, seemingly unpredictable. something to be treated with extreme caution and with all instincts and wits intact, knowing that one false move could end it.
yet she approached him all the same, as if daring him to hunt her, prodding him to put the knife to her throat so she could feel the fine line between pain and death, between living on the run or as a caged animal, yearning for freedom yet as afraid of it as death.
death, the unknown territory, the ultimate fear-scape where existence was a hypothetical probability.
as if knowing her game, he avoided her. at first as if she bored him, an annoying child who did not know caution or the limits of passion. still she came, circling, ignoring him with indifference, then engaging him in a dance, figuring the odds of who between them was the stronger. his eyes held her as a viper poised to strike, yet she never relented.
eventually he came to fear her as an equal, someone capable of the murder of his psyche, the one who could pull him from the safety of controlled nothingness into emotion. she was fascinating, alluring, and dangerously unpredictable. he knew he had to kill her. she was ready.
