Jake looked around the room with his good eye, his left eye.  A patch covered his good eye.  Mark came into view.  He was on crutches.

“You’re on crutches again,” Jake said.

“At least I’m not in a wheel chair this time,” Mark smiled.

“What time is it?”

Mark looked at is watch, “9:30 pm.  You’ve been here about an hour.”

“Where’s Bruce?  Is he okay?”

“I’m here.”  Bruce waved his hand and limped into Jake’s view.  Red stood beside Bruce.

“You okay?” Jake asked.

“I’m bruised.  But I will be okay.” He replied.

“Where is Brad?” Jake asked.

“Don’t know.  After I helped you up, Glover escorted him away,” Red informed him.

Mrs. Whippnell, the nurse walked in.  “Mr. Daniels you can head back to your dorm.  Your crutches and a bag of ice are all you need.  Mr. Johnson, ice and your medicine should get you through the night.  Call us if you can’t fall asleep.  Mr. Cooper, you can stay here or head back to your dorm room.  Your eye will be covered for several days.  You have several stiches underneath that bandage.  You will come back here in a few days and have them removed.”

Jake was slow on the uptake.  “Sorry I missed what you said, I can go back to my dorm room?”

Mrs. Whippernell nodded her head, “Yes.  You can go sleep in your dorm room if you wish.  But if you feel like staying the night here, you can.”

Jake leaned forward in the bed, and swung his feet over the edge, and then stood up.  He stumbled to get his balance.  Red caught him by the arm to keep him from falling.

“Well, maybe you should be staying here,” Mrs. Whippnell thought outloud.

“No, I want to sleep in my own bed.”

“Well, call this station if you feel any oozing on your face, as that means that the stiches may have come loose.”

Jake wave his hand, “I will, and thank you for that image.”

Mrs. Whippnell put a bottle in Jake’s hand, “Take two of these as soon as you get back to the dorm.  They will help with the pain, and help you sleep.”

“Yes, ma’am.  Thank you.”  And the boys walked out of the medical wing and back to Craven Hall.

They were slow in walking through the lighted gravel path on the Quad.  Four friends bruised and injured.  They reached the outside of Craven.  “Since I’m the only one who didn’t visit the nurse tonight, I will get the door.”

Normally the boys would just bound up the stairs.  This evening they took the elevator.  The elevator opened just outside the common room.  They walked into the room.  They stopped. Mrs. Brisby and Principal Glover were waiting for them.

Glover stood up.  “Gentlemen, it is good to see you.  I am glad they didn’t require to spend the night in the medical wing.  Are you able to sit down?”  He motioned to the sofas in front of him.

“Yeah, we can sit,” Mark replied.  He put his crutches down and sat.  Jake sat next to him.  Cal, Henry, Bruce and Red sat down on the next sofa.   Glover, his imposing six foot eight-inch frame slouched a little.  He wiped his hands on his pants and he sat down in a leather chair across from the boys.  Mrs. Brisby sat in a leather chair next to Glover.  Her posture remained proper.  Her grey hair pulled back in in a tight bun, and her smile still pleasant and engaging.

Glover spoke first, “I am sorry about what happened this evening.”  He put his elbows on his knees.  The boys had never seen Glover look so uncomfortable before.  “Thank you, Red, for running to get help.  We have been watching Mr. Cushing for a while.  We knew he was a part of The Dark Cloud.  But we couldn’t remove him for simply being near people we know to be a part of that group.  We are sorry Jake that it took getting into a full blown fight with you.  But thanks to your friends, the fight wasn’t worse than it could have been.”

Jake sifted in his seat.

“Mr. Cooper, you have very good friends here.”

“Thank you.”

Mark raised his hand.  “Principal Glover, you said that you knew that Brad was a part of The Dark Cloud and that there were people he was hanging out with that are a part of that group.  Who else is a part of this group?”

Glover sat up straight in his chair, and he looked at Mrs. Brisby.  “I did say that.  And that’s all I can say, that’s all I will say, for the moment.  I will not involve you with that information.”

“He hung out a lot with Professor O’Grady!” Jake raised his voice.

Glover raised an eyebrow, “You’re right he did.”

“So O’Grady is a part of The Dark Cloud.” Jake replied.

“Yes.  It seems to be the case.” Glover replied.

Mrs. Brisby took a deep breath from shock and raised her hand to her mouth.  “Principal, I didn’t think we were going to tell them!”

“Well, they’re going to realize that O’Grady is no longer here at Dolbin.  They might as well hear it from me.”

Jake leaned forward, “Brisbone.  You took them both to Brisbone.”

“I will not discuss where they were taken.”  Glover stared at Jake.

The room was silent.

Jake shuffled his feet.

Bruce nervously raised his hand.  Glover raised an eyebrow, “Yes, Mr. Johnson.”

“Principal Glover, is there going to be anyone else who comes after any of us?  Especially now that we have taken on Brad?”

Glover breathed deep and then let the breath go.  “I can understand your worry.  Is there anyone else here at school that has threatened you?

The boys shook their heads, “No.”

Glover continued, “Well, then let us hope that is a good sign.  Myself, and the other staff and faculty, here at the school live our lives to protect you.  If we felt that someone, or something, was a direct an imminent threat to you, then it would be dealt with.

But with that, we can’t see everything.  In spite of our Extra-skills and all of the technology that is afforded us.  We can’t see everything.  We are still human.  Being a friend, Mr. Johnson, to Mr. Cooper helped protect him.  I just hope that you keep it that way, among all of you.  Be friends, and look out for each other.  When new people join us next year, include those that look like they could use a friend.  We can protect you, but your friendship is very valuable to each other.  Remember that and protect it.”

Glover took and deep breath and then he stood up.  “Gentlemen, I will leave you now.  Have a good evening.”

“Principal Glover do we still have to take finals this week?” Mark shouted.

“Yes.  Mr. Daniels, you still have to take your finals. I hear Professor Guinness’ history final is brutal.  I suggest you get your rest.”  Glover smiled and left the common room.

Mrs. Brisby stood up.  The boys turned and gave her their attention.  “Gentlemen, since light-out time passed a while ago, I suggest you head to bed.”

Jake raised his hand. “Yes. Mr. Cooper?” Mrs. Brisby asked.

“Mrs. Brisby, I have so many questions that aren’t answered,” Jake said.

She smiled and rubbed her hands.  “What questions do you have Mr. Cooper.  Maybe I can answer them?”

“Why can’t Principal Glover just come out and say that Brad has been sent to Brisbone?  What about Professor O’Grady?  Is he at Brisbone?  Who else are a part of The Dark Cloud?”

Brisby raised her hand to stop the questions.  “Mr. Cooper, I understand that you have more questions.  I can’t answer them.  Those aren’t questions for me to answer.  You must understand that you can’t have all the answers now.  You’re just going to have to trust that Principal Glover knows what he is talking about.”  She looked at the boys, “I know that is not the answer you were looking for.  But it is the answer you’re going to have to accept for the time being.  But tomorrow is another day, and you will notice that day will be brighter.”

With that, Mrs. Brisby left.
