Chapter 13 We Need You to Blend In

Brad kept his head low as walked across the campus on Sunday afternoon.  The campus still abuzz after the Giant Robots upset the day before.  Brad walked into the medical building.  The secretaries greeted him, he just grunted in return.  “O’Grady’s office” Brad gave instructions to the elevator.

“Yes, Mr. Cushing,” the voice replied.

As usual there were several older students working on various assignments.  Beakers bubbled, tablets were read and double-checked, large displays mounted to the wall with various chemical reactions.

“Good afternoon Brad,” O’Grady waved from the far corner of the room.  He took off his goggles,  He ran his hair through his thick curly red hair.  He motioned to the bed, “Go ahead and lay down.  Did you enjoy the game yesterday?”

“What game?”

“The Dolbin ball game, the exhibition between the Sharks and the Robots, I think.”

“I didn’t go.”

O’Grady raised his eyebrows. “Oh, why didn’t you go?”

“Didn’t feel like it,” Brad responded.

“We’re you sick in bed?  Did your stomach hurt?  Did you have a headache?”  His questions got faster.

“No.  None of those things.”  Brad closed his eyes.  “I just didn’t go.”

“Add this to the arguement you had with your hallmates last week, and we are detecting a pattern that you are unable to do what we have asked you to do

O’Grady’s countenance changed.  His voiced lowered.  “Mr. Cushing, we need you at your best.  We need you to blend in.  If the majority of the students seem to be enjoying themselves at a game, then you need to be enjoying yourself.  We need you to not be noticed at this moment.  And you are not succeeding at that.”  O’Grady went over to the wall and tapped a screen.

“What are you doing?” Brad sat up.

O’Grady tapped and swiped some more on the screen.  He stepped back there was Mr. Cushing on the screen.

“Father!” Brad stood up.

Mr. Cushing was dressed in a white dress shirt, with a clean red tie.  His hair, neatly combed to the side.  “Good afternoon, Mr. O’Grady, what is that I owe the pleasure of your call?  I can see that Brad is with you.”

“Yes, he is.  I am afraid that he may need some clarification on his attitude and behavior for our purposes.”  Mr. Cushing face grew more stern.

“Explain, Professor O’Grady.  What do you mean?”  It didn’t seem possible but his voice was even deeper.

“Your son, has been, how do we say this?  He is becoming more noticeable?  He nearly got into a fight with several boys in the locker room.  He also didn’t feel like attending a Dolbin Ball game where nearly the entire school attended.”  Mr. Cushing shifted in his seat.  Professor O’Grady didn’t seem to notice.  “I think he needs reminding that his mission, his purpose is to not be noticed.  To blend in, be liked.”

Mr. Cushing tilted his head back a little and shifted his gaze towards Brad.  “He is correct son.  I know that you may not like some of the students you are with, and I certainly understand skipping the silly Dolbin Ball game, but your purpose is to blend in, not to be noticed.  There will be a time when the plan will change.  But for now, you are to blend in.”

Brad looked at the ground, “Yes, sir.”

“Is that all Professor O’Grady?” Mr. Cushing was abrupt.

O’Grady nodded toward the screen, “Yes, sir. Have a good afternoon.”  The screen went black.  O’Grady turned back to Brad.  “Lay down on the bed, so we can do this round of treatment.”  He got an IV ready.  “And Brad I hope I don’t have to make that call to your father again.”  He put in the IV into Brad’s arm.  “And remember, you are replaceable.”  He smiled patted Brad on the shoulder and walked out the door.   Brad closed his eyes, dreaming of throwing O’Grady through a window.
