Chapter 4 Meeting with O’Grady

The blossoms on the trees were turning into leaves, and the warm air calmly blew through the branches.

It was Saturday, May 7th. Brad walked into the medical building. He didn’t sign-in. He didn’t say hi to the secretaries manning the door. He walked straight into the elevator.

“Second Floor,” he spoke aloud. The doors slid silently shut.

Brad walked quickly onto the second floor. He walked passed workers in lab coats who stared at screens, and huddled over lab experiments.

“Brad! I’m over here,” O’Grady waved Brad over, he stood up from where he was working with a microscope. “Come here, I want to show you something.”

Brad walked briskly.

O’Grady put his hand on Brad’s back, and pointed to the microscope. “Look through here, I want to show you cells that can heal from cancer.”

Brad looked into the microscope. He saw cells.  “What am I looking at? To me they look like just cells.”

O’Grady shook his head in disappointment, “Watch again!”

Brad put his eyes back on the microscope. The cell on the slide spit out an orange glob. The orange glob disintegrated as it left the cell. The cell expelled another glob. The second glob disintegrated like the first one. The cell shrunk and looked healthier.

“Is the orange stuff cancer?” Brad asked.

“Yes! I dyed it so it was easier to track.” O’Grady took him by the arm. “Come on with me. We need to get to work.”

He led Brad into another room, O’Grady shut the door. A bed was in the middle of the room, and monitors hung on the wall. “Go ahead and lay down.”

Brad did as he was instructed. O’Grady inserted an IV. Brad winced.

The monitors showed Brad’s skeleton, his heart rate, and blood pressure. O’Grady pushed and button and liquid flowed into Brad’s arm. “So, how have you felt?” O’Grady asked.

 “Fine.”

“No headaches, stomachaches?”

Brad shook his head.

“Have you been fighting anymore?”

Brad rolled eyes. “You know I got into a fight with Jake.”

“Yes. I do. But have you gotten into anymore? I don’t want these treatments causing you to get into fights. We don’t need people talking about you anymore. We don’t want any more attention on us. We have plans for you, and we don’t need you in trouble with Glover, or worse, being expelled.” O’Grady looked at a monitor behind him. “Go ahead and lay down, this will take a few minutes.”

“Why are you afraid of Glover?” Brad asked.

O’Grady stared at his screen, “You let me worry about Glover. Just close your eyes and go to sleep.”

Brad put his head on the pillow and closed his eyes.

He dreamed of hitting Principal Glover.
