Chapter 15—Surfing and Games

The wave knocked Mark to the ground.  He washed up on shore, Jake, Cal, and Henry stood above him.

“I don’t think you earned any points on that run,” Cal said.  He looked up at the scoreboard.  “Yep, no points.”

“My turn.”  Henry grabbed his surf board and ran out into the virtual waves.

Mark brushed the sand off his face and legs.

Preparing for the end of the semester made it a long week.  Extra homework, longer tests, and project coming due, made time in the VR room more than needed.  Jake and Mark enjoyed the game of surfing when their families visited for Parents Week.  So they decided to try it again.  Bruce and Red were in another run pretending to be professional football players.

Henry rode his surfboard in.  “And…let’s take a look at the leader board after that wonderful run.”

A green 9 floated in the middle of the room.  Henry threw his fist into the air.  Cal patted him on the back.  “Nice run, but I’m still in the lead.”  Cal pointed to the scoreboard where his name and face floated on the scoreboard above the boys heads showing the order of their positions—Cal first, Henry second, Jake third, and Mark fourth.

Jake was next.  “Okay, Cooper break a leg,” cheered Mark.

“Isn’t that for actors?” Jake replied.

“Not in this case, I want you to actually break your leg.  That way I can pass you in points,” Mark replied.  His finger pointing to the leader board.

Jake rolled his eyes, “Thanks!”  Jake took his board and ran out to catch his wave.  He stood up easily on the board, got his hands out to balance himself, then he fell easily into the wave.  He washed back up on shore.

“Four points,” Mark informed him.

“We’re running out of time before we have to give the room up.” Cal looked at a timer over his left shoulder, ninety seconds were left on the clock.

“It looks like you’re going to win anyway,” said Henry.  “I say we all enjoy one last run anyway.  Let’s see if the game will let us all go at once.”  He was grinning ear to ear, and he ran out into the water.

The other three boys followed suit.  They rode a wave, try their best to keep from hitting each other.  A yellow warning light flash around them, “Only one player at a time in this game,” scolded an electronic voice.

The timer hit zero, a buzzing sound emanated throughout the game.

“Oh, well.” Mark threw his hands in the air.  “That was fun.”  The room slowly transformed from a beach to the green room.  Green covered the walls, ceilings, and floor.  The waves went from being water to a rolling padded floor floor.  The sand was vacuumed underneath the floor by vents that lined the floor and walls.

The boys cleaned up and went into the hallway.  Bruce and Red came out from their game, along with four other students.  They were all covered in sweat.

“That was awesome,” Bruce smiled.  “We were the Falcons.  Those sixth graders were the Rams.”  Bruce was breathing hard.

“Who won?” asked Cal.

Bruce motioned at the sixth graders, “They did.  Beat us 35-14.  They seemed to have played that game before.”

Red nodded in agreement, “Yeah, they were good.”

Brad and Maggie walked to the VR hallway.

“Oh, there you are.  We didn’t see you we were leaving the dorm,” said Jake.

“That’s because I wasn’t there.  We’re going to play a game” Brad replied.

“What are you two going to play?” Cal asked.  “I just beat these guys surfing.”

“Don’t know yet.  I guess we’re just going to look and see,” Maggie replied.

Brad waved them off, “I’ll you guys later.”  And they went to the VR room, that Bruce and Red played.

“That room maybe covered in sweat,” Bruce called out.

Jake made a face, “That’s freakin’ disgusting.”

“Just giving them a fair-warning.”

“I wonder if he’ll be able to jump six feet in that game,” Mark wondered.

“Yeah, I’m still thinking about that.  That seems to be a new skill for him,” said Red.

“I know,” replied Jake.

You are an awesome content creator. Have you ever considered writing any educational content? If you do and use the steemiteducation tag, I think you would get some pretty good rewards.

Thanks! That's a big compliment coming from you. But yeah, I could give it a try. I actually resigned from teaching, for many many reasons, so now I focus on my writing. But I can still do education content.
