Finals: The Dolbin School Book 4

I am serializing my next book here first before it is available anywhere else.  It is still in the formatting stage at the moment.  I have serialized the other three books here on Steemit in the past year.  Here are the first chapters from where I serialized each book.
Dolbin School for the Extraordinary

Chapter 7 Principals

Monday morning the dining hall was crowded with students talking and eating.  The noise of murmuring students filled the dining hall.   Jake ate breakfast with Mark, Cal and Henry.  Cal annoyed Henry by having electric sparks come out from his finger tips.  Henry reminded him that he was holding metal utensils and didn’t want to be electrocuted.

Jake and Mark finished breakfast and headed to Professor Guinness’ class.  The hallway was full of life with students traveling to classes.

“Good Morning, Gentlemen!” said Professor Guinness as he stood at his classroom door welcoming students.  Jake waved to the professor.  The boys walked into class and sat down.

Brad walked in thirty seconds behind them.  Jake and Mark watched Brad walk past and sit two rows behind them.

“I guess he isn’t talking to us right now,” Mark said.

Jake rolled his eyes and shook his head.  “I’ve got to worry about this test that is coming up instead.”  Jake pointed to the front of the room where Professor Guinness had posted that there was going to be a test on Friday.

“I hope you all remember that you will have a test on Friday.”  Guinness tapped the front screen with the announcement.  “If you have been keeping up with your syllabus, this should not be a surprise.”

“I am not ready for a test on Friday,” Mark moaned.

Professor Guinness stepped forward, toward the class, “Class, get out your tablets and pull up today’s lesson.”  There was the quiet rustle of students putting away backpacks and the tapping of fingers on tablets.  “We are going to begin looking at the history of the staff here at Dolbin School for the Extraordinary.  You all know our current Principal, Mr. Glover, and he is very accomplished.  You also need to know his predecessors and their accomplishments.”

Guinness swiped the screen at the front of the room.  A picture of a woman appeared.  She had black hair, parted down the middle and pulled back in a pony tail.  She was wearing a gray suit.  “This is Principal Hollinsworth, Claire Hollinsworth.  She was our principal before Principal Glover.  She first served as a professor of engineering.  It was under her leadership that the virtual reality rooms, on the floor above us, where put in,” Guinness point to the ceiling, where the virtual reality rooms were located on the floor above.  Jake and his family used them when they visited the previous month.

“So, I am a fan of Hollinsworth,” Mark said to himself.

“Her engineering background added to the amount of technology here at the school.” A picture appeared on the front screen of Principals Hollinsworth working in a lab, she wore a white lab coat and safety goggles.

“What was her Extra-power?” said, Tony Kirby, a student a few rows behind Jake and Mark.

“Math was obviously one of her gifts, she was also fire-resistant,”said Professor Guinness.

“There aren’t that many  fire-resistant Extras are there professor?” replied Tony.

“It is true, Mr. Kirby, fire-resistance occurs less among Extras than others.  But that does not make it more or less valuable than other Extra abilities,” replied Mr. Guinness.  “Principal Hollinsworth did use her fire-resistance ability in her engineering and VR work.  When she was professor here she used her math ability and her knowledge of fire to help create fire proof structures here on campus and to help make older buildings more fire resistant.  That includes the building we are in, The Dolbin Building, she upgraded with paint retardant material that cover the walls, a ventilation system that will remove the oxygen from the room, fire-suppressing foam that comes from the vents, and sprinkler systems all responding to the type of fire that is present.”

Brad spoked up, “Is her research on fire-resistant materials available?”

Professor Guinness paused, “Why, yes it is, Mr. Cushing.  You may find it in the library.  I must admit, I’ve never had a fourth grader interested in her work.”

Brad shrugged his shoulders and smirked a little, “It just seems interesting, being able to stop fires.”

“I am glad to see you’re taking an interest an a person’s research,” replied Professor Guinness.  “Why do you think she was interested in creating more fire proof and fire resistant places?”

At first no one spoke, students look at their tablets, the floor, and each other.  Then a hand went up.

Jessica Ludwig, a girl with straight jet-black hair raised her hand.

“Yes, Ms. Ludwig?” said Professor Guinness.

“She must have known the damage that fires can do to buildings and people.  Is it possible that she  discovered her Extra-ability of fire resistance in a fire?”

Professor Guinness smiled, “That’s an excellent inference, Ms. Ludwig.  It is true that Principal Hollinsworth discovered her abilities when she was in the fourth grade, when her home burned down.  She lost her parents in the fire, and thankfully her little brother was able to get out in time, andd she of course remained unharmed in the fire.”

A newspaper article appeared on the screen at the front of the classroom, the words “Fire Destroys Home” in bold words appeared across the top of the newspaper.  The classroom was somber as they read the newspaper article on their tablets.

“As many of us know, we learn of our Extra-abilities in times of crisis.  She learned of hers in a very painful way.  She used that pain, that experience to help make the world a better place.  Hopefully that is something you will learn here with your years a Dolbin.”

Professor Guinness coninuted his lesson on Principal Hollinsworth.  Hollinsoworth began her career at Dolbin first as a professor, then a Dean, then Principal.  She left the school to more in fire research.

“Tomorrow we will learn about the principal before Hollinsworth, Principal Marsten.  Your homework is read the materials on Principal Marsten before our next class.”

“I’ve never had an assignment about a school principal before,”  Mark mumbled to himself, as they left the classroom.

“I wonder why she left as principal?  It seems to be the kind of job you take for the rest of your life?” Jake asked.

“I don’t know,” replied Mark.  “Maybe  you should ask Guinness that in the next class, or ask Professor Powers the next time you meet with him.”

“She is still living,” said Brad as he came up behind them.

Jake and Mark stunned that Brad has spoken to them did not reply immediately.  “How do you know?” Jake replied.

“Professor O’Grady knows her,” Brad replied  “He told me that she works for a company that makes the helicopters that helped put out the fire in the medical building.”

Jake and Mark looked at each other, but they didn’t say anything.  The three boys reached Dr. Fisher’s math class, without discussing anymore of the matter.
