Common Mistakes And How To Fix Them

I will be highlighting the common mistakes found this week, and I will be offering tips on how to avoid them in future contributions. The tips will depend solely on the scores received by the contributions in a particular week.

1. Contributions scored 0

The issue you reported is OS related and is therefore not the application's fault. The operating system does not support this particular feature

  • My advice for cases like this is - wait for the PO to affirm your observations. I know most times the project owners are too busy and do not respond in reasonable time and so you are pushed to post on utopian without them first acknowledging whether an observed behavior is a bug or an intended. It can be frustrating but I'd still advise that hunters in the future should wait for the PO's thoughts, especially in cases where the details behind the implementation in question are sketchy.
2. Contributions with a score below 40

The severity level of the bug was marked as negligible.

Submission of cosmetic or trivial UI issues (phone orientation, phone locking/unlocking etc.) that have a negligible effect on the functionality of the application may lead to a lower score of your contribution, thus reducing your chances of receiving a reward

  • If what you spotted is a discrepancy in the user interface or just the front end appearance of the software, then it is most probably a trivial bug and would be scored as such. So make sure to look out for this.

  • Also, there are times when a contribution is scored negligible because the expected behavior of a particular feature could still be achieved by a default option. For example - while some third party camera apps may not work when used for uploading within other applications (probably because the PATH for that particular cam app is not set), the default android cam works. It will be particularly stressful and redundant to have the project owner set a unique PATH for every cam application out there. This is one thing a contributor should look out for.

Other News

This is to inform contributors and the general public that while reports will be accepted to projects outside the whitelist, they will only be reviewed if the issue opened is acknowledged by the project owner or maintainer.

While the new guidelines are yet to be officially announced, bug-hunters and open source enthusiasts looking to help open source projects, please take a look at our whitelist of projects that you can submit bug reports for:

I have a question ,suppose an open source projects app is in still development not pushlished in playstore or other plateform but i can produce the app and can run successfully,in this situation if i found a bug or other issue, can i submit bug-hunting contribution in utopian.will it approved for review?

No they don't necessarily have to be on playstore, it could be on the github releases page.

Also, we only allow tests on projects in their beta phase, alpha releases will not be considered .

Finally, reports to projects outside the white list will have to be acknowledged by the PO's or project maintainer before they can be reviewed by the utopian team

thanks then the project should have the last commit before 6 month or more?
or what is the max time for last commit to follow utopian guidelines?

It is usually 6 months but I think the best thing to do is - make sure the repo is actively maintained before contributing, Moreover, utopian will only review your contribution if it is acknowledged by the project maintainer
