☠️ Hi Vis Gear ☠️

Well this one might seem self explanatory and obvious, but it's something which is often overlooked by bike riders.
You can clearly see in the image above just how much of a difference high vis gear can make.

What is high vis?
High vis stands for high visibility and is gear that can be worn in dark settings like night time or really stormy and gloomy day. When lights shine on this gear it has highly reflective properties, so you will stand out against the dark background.

Gear like this in my mind is one of the most important things motorbike riders can do to keep safe. Like the old saying goes, it doesn't matter how safe you ride it's the other drivers you gotta worry about.
When you consider that most accidents are caused because the other driver just didn't see you it makes sense to try and make yourself more visible.
Another thing to consider is that during night time the lights of your bike can easily blend in with the traffic, so it can be difficult to see you. I hate riding at night time and it's even worse when it's peak hour traffic, everyone is so desperate to save a minute or two driving time that they just cut in and out of lanes without looking.
Also some people are just in a world of their own, with no idea of whats going on around them.

Now during day/summer time when there is plenty of light here in Australia, I don't bother wearing high vis gear. But now that we are coming into winter time it's time for me to start wearing it again. Especially when stopping distances are increased due to the roads being wet and slick.

Now you don't have to spend big bucks to be seen.
Go to any protective clothing store and you can pick up a cheap vest that road workers wear, which will cost you peanuts and you can wear it over the top of your jacket. If it gets wet it won't matter as it's on the outside of your jacket.

This is the option I usually go with, but after having a few years break from riding I can't seem to find it in the shed. So I thought what the heck I'm going to get a high vis jacket for night time and winter days, and keep my other one for day time and summer.

It's little things like this which all add up to a reduced chance of being in an accident.
As always ride safe and think of others while your on the road, not just yourself.
