☠️ Lane Positioning ☠️

For this next installment in my Riding Tips For Keeping Safe Series, I would like to talk a little bit about rider positioning and how positioning on the road can really reduce the risk of an accident.

Ok so what do I mean by posiitoning?
Well I mean where you position your bike in the traffic lane, while your cruising through traffic.
So let's begin with a scenario, your cruising down a road where you have two lanes going in either position and your sitting in the right hand lane(for left hand driving countries just reverse, so left instead of right).

Now as your cruising down the road your sitting behind a car in front, and up ahead there is a car turning which will cut across both the lanes of traffic your currently a part of.
Now if your sitting in the right lane, but in that lane your positioned as far to the left as possible then your less visible to that car waiting to cut across the lanes.
Where as if your sitting in that right lane, as far as you can to the right of the lane then that car waiting to turn up ahead has much more of a chance to see you.

Here is an image of what I mean by lane positioning.

Now the image above is the reverse scenario of what I'm talking about, but the bottom line is if your sitting as close to the middle of the road as safely possible oncoming traffic is more likely to see you coming.
Now the same is true for the left lane of a two lane road, sitting as far to the left of that lane will increase the chances that someone pulling out from a side road will see you.

The point here is to give yourself the most amount of time to be seen by other motorists on the road.
Now if you leave plenty of room between you and the car in front then you don't have to worry about this as much, but I think every chance you can give someone to see you is a good thing.
It's these sort of defensive driving tactics which us motorbike riders need to constantly be aware of and analysing.

It's small things like this which all add up to keeping us moto riders a little bit safer on the road.
Use your head and ride safe and smart :)
