Motorcycle Riding Tips for Keeping Safe - Lane Splitting

in #travel7 years ago

If you have not heard of lane splitting or lane filtering before, it can be a real advantage to keeping ourselves safe when pulling up to a stop behind traffic.

Lane splitting gives motorbike riders the ability to ride in between two lanes of traffic. This is a great idea when traffic is stopping and you may be concerned about the driver behind you.
Rather than just stopping and having to check your rear view mirror to ensure the driver behind you will in fact stop, we can bypass this altogether and move in between the cars.

I know as a motorcyclist it's one of my concerns when traffic is coming to a stop, especially when traffic may be stopped just over the crest of a hill in a 80 or 100 kms per hour zone. Now we won't have to worry about drivers behind us who aren't paying attention.

There are some critical rules which must be adhered to, and I encourage all riders to follow these simple rules:

☣️ You can lane split only if traveling 30 kms per hour or less
☣️ Only allowed when safe to do
☣️ You can't do it while in school zones
☣️ You can't do it next to parked cars, between vehicles and the kerb or at round abouts
☣️ You can't do it in bike, bus or tram lanes
☣️ Only motorbike riders can do it, if you have a car license and a scooter or moped your not allowed to do it

You should check the laws in your state to ensure you are allowed to lane split and fully understand the conditions for doing so.
Here is a link to the rules and conditions for hte state of South Australia.

Now you might say that it's not fair motorbike rider can and a moped rider with a drivers license can't, but that is because to get your motorbike license you have to pass the advanced rider safe training course which teaches about hazard identification and avoidance.
All of the other rules make sense, and in school zones you should always be cautious of children who may run out in front of you.

Another thing to consider is we are actually allowed to do this if traffic is moving slowly, so other vehicles don't have to be stationary.
I think there should be more exposure on lane splitting as I have had a few people yell at me for moving past their car, and sometimes I see people move across to try and cut me off which displays no due care for other road users.

As always ride safe and think about other road users.
