Stanford University / 史丹福大學

Since the girls were having their Gymnastics camp only in the morning of that week, we had plenty of time in the afternoon. Therefore, I took them to one of the best universities in the world, Stanford University.
According to several global university ranking systems, Stanford University is always among the top 5. Same as the other university I visited in U.K., the University of Cambridge.

在女兒們參與體操班的那週，她們只是上午上課，下午我們都是很空閒的。所以我就帶她們到全世界最好的大學之一的史丹福大學。跟之前我分享過的劍橋大學一樣，是長居大部分國際大學排行榜首5名的超級著名大學。

Stanford University located at Palo Alto of California, one can consider it center and mother of Silicon Valley. Many well-known technology companies' headquarters are here, like:

• Pinterest
• Tesla
• Hewlett Packard (HP)
• VMware
• Google
• Paypal
• Skype
• Logitech

史丹福大學位於美國加州的帕羅奧圖。這樣可以說是矽谷的中文甚至發源地。很多有名的科技公司的總部都在這裏。

Many Stanford alumni are foubders, cofounders or leaders in world leading technology companies. For guy who have worked in technology field for over 20 years, Stanford University is a sacred place in my heart. Put aside its important position, it is simply a beautiful place to visit.

史丹福大學很多的畢業生都是高科技公司的創辦者或者是現在的領導人。所以這所大學對於像我這種在科技界打拼超過廿年的人來說，就像是一所聖殿一樣的存在。即使不理會其崇高的地位，這裏的景色亦是十分美麗動人的。絕對值得到此遊覽。

That was a sunny afternoon and was a little bit hot for us to walk under the sun. I parked at a location far from the main quadrangle of Stanford University, so we had to walk a long distance there. It took us about 30 minutes to reach the Oval as we took photos and rest a little bit in our way.

那天下午陽光燦爛，我們在太陽下行走就能感覺到加州陽光的熱力迫人。由於我泊車的位置距離大學大門比較遠，我們走了不少的路才能到達大門的橢圓形草地。因為我們邊走，邊看，邊拍照又休息了一會，所以用了30分鐘才到達。

We then moved from the Oval to bookstore as the girls felt tired and thirsty. You won't be bored here as you can shop, read and eat. So we spent about 2 hours there.

因為女孩子們都又累又渴，所以我們就到大學書店去。這樣有吃的，喝的，買的，還有大量書籍，任何人都不感到悶場。我們亦在此消磨了兩個小時。

Outside of the bookstore is the White Memorial Fountain (The Claw) where students like to have their fountain hopping.

書店外面就是紀念噴泉，很多大學生喜歡都在這裏享受陽光。

The girls were very impressed by the beauty of this campus as well as what the students were doing. They of course still didn't have the idea about the academic achievement of Stanford University, what is the meaning of being able to study here. That's why when they said they would love to study here, and I told them they have to work extremely hard in order to get admitted, they didn't have much feeling about it.

女兒們都被這優美的校園和大學生的生活所吸引。當然她們現在對大學的學術成就沒有慨念。亦不知道可以在這讀書代表着什麼。所以當我跟她們說她們一定要非常非常努力才可能願到這裏上大學，她們並沒有什麼感覺。

This trip might not help me to motivate them on their knowledge pursuing road, however, I believe they should have their eyes and minds opened to a much bigger horizon compared to our little city Hong Kong.

雖然這次的到訪未必能推動她們對學術的追求，但我十分相信她們的世界現在已經不再局限在香港這小小的一個城市了。
