Chapter 11: The Investigation
“What do you mean it was just a fire?” Chief Barnes from the SIA – Satchmo Intelligence Agency, shot back at Captain Moss from the lower district SPD – Satchmo Police Department.
The smell of burnt bodies still lay thick in the air as the Satchmo Fire Department tried to cool down the collapsed building. It was just a pile of char and rubble.
“Do you know how many people were in this building?” asked the Chief.
“No sir, we don’t. We’ll have to wait for the debris to cool down before we can assess the casualties. So far we were only able to retrieve five bodies.” The Captain spoke with a very calm demeanour.
“I expect a full investigation” Chief Barnes was a little annoyed with the Captain’s behaviour. “You… yes, you. Come over here!” the Chief called one of the men from the fire department over.
“Do you know this building?” he asked. “Yes sir” answered the fireman “I’m telling you this is not going to be a pretty sight.” “It isn’t a pretty sight!” Chief Barnes fired back. “Yes, of course sir. What I mean is that this building has been on our list of major potential hazards for a long time already.”
“What do you mean?” asked the Chief. “Well sir, we’ve been trying for month’s to have this building cleared out and demolished. The structural framework had been tested last year already and had been deemed unsafe.”
Captain Moss was now glaring at the fireman.
“Tell me young man,” the Chief asked “How many people do you think there were in this building?”
“Well sir, it’s hard to say but I would think, according to our last check, that there were at least 150 people in the building.”
Chief Barnes closed his eyes and drew a deep breath “When will we have a final count?” he asked the fireman.
“Well sir, it will probably take us at least three days to have the rubble cooled and cleared” answered the fireman.
“Get your Chief to contact me. I want a full count on my desk in two days” demanded Chief Barnes. “You got that?”
“Yes sir!” said the fireman.
“Now get back to work!” the Chief demanded. He turned his attention to Captain Moss. “Someone’s head is going to roll for this” he said. “I expect a full forensic report on the bodies that have been retrieved so far and a full report on the rest that we may find. Ok?”
“Yes Chief” answered the Captain.
“Oh, before I forget” said Chief Barnes “Miss McKay will be heading the investigation from here on out.” “But Chief…” the Captain wanted to object. “No buts Captain. That’s an order!” With that Chief Barnes turned around and headed towards Miss McKay who was scratching around the edges of the rubble.
“Chief” she said as he approached “I’ve found lots of pieces of metal that don’t appear to be part of the…” the Chief interrupted “Yes, ok, very well. Let me know once you have some clear answers for me on that. As for the investigation you will now be in charge, understood?”
“In charge?” asked Miss McKay. “Yes, that’s correct. Do you understand?” asked the Chief.
“Well, yes Chief, I do. It’s just that I’m still so new…” “That’s exactly why I want you to be in charge. Look, you’re smart, very smart and you have a natural ability to figure things out. Can I put my trust in you?” the Chief asked.
“Yes sir, of course” she replied. “Good. It’s settled then. Oh, one more thing” the Chief said. “Keep a close eye on Captain Moss.” “Yes Chief, will do” Miss McKay replied smiling.
Chief Barnes always listened to his sixth sense and although he never quite liked Captain Moss today he had something concrete to work with. "I'll figure out what's happened here" he thought.
