Twelve Sets of Twelve Different Fruits For A Guaranteed Twelve Months of Luck For The New Year

in #story6 years ago (edited)

Yes, it seems that the "Christmas Days" are over for the many cause it suddenly hushed around us. I live near a grocery store and the parking's been full and busy for days before Dec. 25 but not these days.

Just when I thought I could now hang out with my friends cause we're still official vacay, I get slapped on the face with the fact that the most of them are still busily preparing for the New Year! Makes me wonder, are you, too? ( oh well, sorry that I asked - none of my business really, just so curious).

Since I lived here, I sort of got freed from the hype of the buzz of shopping here and there to prepare for all these festivities. Shopping? Which woman doesn't like going shopping? I do and I've been shopping, too but mostly, shoes, bags, clothes and all the shallows you could imagine us women buying.. just that and the usual ~~ doing the groceries and buying food stocks.

A friend of mine asked whether I could accompany her in the market cause she could use a hand carrying all the 12 sets of 12 different fruits for New Year. I asked why she needs that much cause I thought she'd be throwing a huge New Year's Eve's feast. She threw me back the question of whether we've never done it at home and shook the box of memories in my head.

"Oh yes we did, I remember now."; I told her and reluctantly asked her again about why on earth do we actually do that.

She looked me with her eyes looking like they're going to pop out their sockets and asked whether I really don't know. I shrugged my shoulder cause I really had no clue. Gosh, I haven't observed cultures and traditions since I was 19 - that's 20 years plus already I swear i didn't know.

She pulled me to the side and explained it's for good luck saying that if I want to attract good luck for the whole year I should prepare 12 pieces of 12 sets of twelve different kinds of fruits! My! I realized how serious this is so since all the fruits I could imagine in the market's huge, I used my period as an excuse not to go to the market.

I realized my country has too many superstitions and myths and beliefs no one can prove are actually effective nor working. I have nothing against those beliefs .. it's just I feel sorry for all the effort and burden it seems to put on the shoulder of anyone who observes them.

How about where you live, do you guys also need to prepare twelve sets of twelve different fruits to guarantee you the whole twelve months luck or would that kitty statue that shakes its hand on an invite gesture actually enough to have in the house to do that? Does that really work?

If it does, does that mean I could just sit under a tree, do nothing, watch the mother nature that I love entertain me much and expect it to still rain mow ~ney while I do that? What exactly do the folks who came up with the idea of the twelve sets of twelve different fruits, 12 pieces a kind mean by "doing that could guarantee you a year of lucky months? I can't fathom the logic behind it.

How about 12 sets of twelve different cryptos and would the set really be just 12 pieces each per set or may I have a thousand? And say I may have a thousand, would that mean extra regular luck? Who else observes this tradition, please enlighten me for I really don't get the need to do all the trouble of hoarding that much fruits and that it should be complete so when the clock strikes 12 in the New Year's Eve, your luck has been locked. Really?

Somehow I wonder, which country or ethnicity has influenced and conditioned our people in observing this and how many of us Pinoys are still doing this. Shout out in the comment if you are brave to admit, 5% up to anyone who'd ever dare and another 5% to anyone who'd explain how this myth I mean - fruit thing works!

Somehow, I worry about what's going to happen to the rest of the fruits if my friend's family won't manage to eat all of them. Oh well, it's none of my business.

Can you identify the twelve fruits in that drawing above? 5% up for identifying one - again, just one , don't be greedy! If the fruit has already been identified let it go .(wink wink).

This content's 100% mine. I drew the pic above on my Note 1 .

thanks much mon ami

I think I'd have some sore shoulders after shopping for all of those
and then we'd have to sort and arrange them in piles so yes lot'za work indeed!

unfortunately, red pills seem invisible hihi ^ ^

haha.. I didn't expect you see the pear but I guess we both know why :D
makes me wonder, is it your favorite fruit? This one's a conference pear, I've just finished the last one :D

Have a Blessed New Year for you both !
I raise my glass of half filled champagne and water to the both of you for great health, happiness, wealth, balance, LOVE and everything else you both desire ^ ^

Happy 2018 to you both and your whole family!

We have another custom here in Greece
On New Year's Day, we throw a pomegranate on the floor for good luck.
It's the crisis u know; we can't afford many fruits :D
Makes a mess, you have to clean up afterwards.
To be honest, I am a bit superstitious.
Never walk under ladders, and don't really like black cats.
I love cats, but not the black ones :D
May the force be with you Ivy, i wish you:
a happy, healthy 2018 for you and hubby and rest of your family and ....
many, many strawberries
p.s. i think you have a blueberry there on your sketch? that purple one.

I saw your comment before I went out today and I was laughing all the way to the car and my husband asked me why, I showed him this and he, too burst out laughing
you funny Jedi!

okay, I guess it's understandable that you guys are indeed experiencing crisis in Greece and throwing one fruit is such a waste most of all - pomegranate? This wouldn't be okay in my country, we believe that throwing food would mean the food would stay away from you for it has felt disrespected ;)

as for the ladder thing, we have that superstition, too hahah
small world isn't it

as for the cat, I think that belief is quite a discrimination to black cats
but we have such superstition, too
I feel sorry for all black cats but IMHO it's all in the head and it's hard to shake such belief off

unfortunately, no that's not a blueberry, too huge to be a blueberry dear :)

Long time no see 아이비선생님
You don't need to find the reason or something to prove whether right or not.
the Important thing is your wife would eat you, lol.

I follow the order of my wife unconditionally.

aniong aseyeo slowwalker nim

so I guess she's the boss? kkkk ^ ^

do you need help eating them later? I mean sorting them ^ ^ kkk...
I want to greet you "saehae bok mani badeuseyo"
but we know that Sol Nal is still on the way
and it isn't two days later but thank you
for being brave enough to share that you actually observe such traditions, too

any how, Happy 2018 New Year to you and your whole family!
Advance Happy Sol Nal, too!

I have never heard of the 12 sets of different fruits.
Throughout the times we create people superstition and it inherits and spreads.
It is in our nature to wish and dream, but I am absolutely sure that if we wish and dream of positive things it will happen. Without that, we do not achieve anything. If we only wish strong enough, it will come. I have experienced it several times. I believe the universe listens to us and returns something.

Here in Norway I do not know about such traditions, we just want each other a good happy new year, as it is commonplace all over the world.

Happy New Year to you @englishtchrivy

unfortunately, that's one tradition I grew up with while sleeping in a septic tank before I was offered the red pill if you know what I mean :D

it is indeed in the desire to better one's lives that these myths or superstitions exist
I do believe in conjuring things but then with action of course, and I'm glad we had this otherwise I'd be writing outing stories again tonight which is so many here already :D so thanks to this superstition I've got a story to tell :D

Happy New Year and may the crypto's force be with us ;) !

"the crypto's force be with us" Yes, it will @englishtchrivy

Twelve sets of twelve different fruits>?!?! I mean, it sounds like a lot o work but if it's guaranteed...

:OD

lol..
do you need a red pill, too ?

Yeah, why not. I wonder what I would wake up to?

I must admit that I totally ignored this tradition, I am from the countryside and here we have many traditions of the holidays, however you never hear them.
I presume that the fruits could be the following
pear, plums, grapes, cranberries, melon, watermelon, peaches, peaches, orange, kiwi, grapefruit, tangerine
I take this opportunity to wish you a happy year 2018, that will arrive at your home full of beautiful emotions, peace, happiness and prosperity.
Have a good night dear friend @englishtchrivy

hmm..
Happy New Year to you and your family :) @jlufer

I was actually asking to guess JUST ONE fruit on the pic

If you are right, misunderstand the question, it was not the twelve fruits, it was just one, many times it happens to me that I get lost when I use the google translator, sorry.
I wish you a happy rest

Happy New Year

I neither have heard of the 12 sets of different fruits, only about grapes and like in my country, Venezuela, they are so expensive , people are going to have tangerines.
Nice post. Upvoted.
Have a nice evening

thank you !
You made me realize I forgot to include that she mentioned the rounder the luckier but oh well.. it's all here :D

haha now i am in dilemma right now to do or not to do that

hahahaha
you probably would ;)
good luck deciding ;)

i like post

Oh! I see that today You have a gastronomic day! Coincidence. Today, I have the same theme :) In our country, we are now preparing for the New year. Additionally buy some products for the festive table. But about the fruit of this tradition, for good luck, I hear for the first time. We have a slightly different concept about attracting good luck into our home and family. We love fruit, but 12 different species is perhaps too much. I see that my friend @jlufer familiar with this set and he identified them all. I shouldn't even try. I think that if we believe in something, it works for us. It is possible that each fruit is like a gift to each calendar month. So the whole year will be successful. Our traditional new year's table should be very plentiful at all meals. There must be a lot. And of course the main attributes of the festive table it's Mandarin and Russian caviar. Of course every woman wants to show their specialities. :) This abundance of food is a distinctive national trait. And it doesn't matter that it's just impossible to eat as much. Importantly, it brings home wealth and prosperity for the whole year. Thank you @englishtchrivy

wait .. you're from Russia right?
I also like a feast on my table for the New Year but it's just me and my husband who eats them
most of our friends are away abroad on vacay now :D
but we never thought the feast brings luck
it does feel lucky to have something to eat though

Yes , I'm from Russia. The City Of St. Petersburg. We have a New Year is a family holiday. It is usually found at home in family circle. Preparing many different foods. On the festive table there should be a plethora of different meals. Well, something like that...

It doesn't matter that all this is impossible to eat. It is a tradition of hospitality and the desire to ensure that the coming year brings us prosperity and wealth to every home. We say that as the New year meet, so spend it. After a celebratory feast, greetings and wishes, people take to the streets to join in various folk festivities. We're just having fun, launched into the sky with spectacular fireworks and dance around the Christmas Tree. Thank you @englishtchrivy . I congratulate You and Your family a happy New Year!

now you made me hungry too am supposed to log out but I saw this hahaah
what's that purple dessert looking foodie in the middle?
am drooling hahaha

hahaha Oh! This masterpiece dish all Russian hostesses. This is called "herring under a fur coat". This is the signature dish of any holiday in Russia. On the flat plate is spread a layer of chopped herring. Then cover the coat of vegetables. It's several layers of potatoes, onions, carrots and beets. Boiled beetroot mixed with layer of mayonnaise gives this lilac tint. This is a very rich dish, but impossible to resist. hihi... Then after a meal we look at ourselves in the mirror with a question in our eyes - where's my waist? :) and after such holiday feasts we run in gym :)

oh, it's a shuba ^ ^

as for losing the waist I had that hahahha
but not anymore .. sometimes I'd like to believe that its true what people say about women having the same body their moms have because I'm pretty skinny no matter what I eat hmmm wait except for if I take bread and potatoes I do gain weight :D

Happy New Year to you and your family!
