Flagging: I'm back on the job! And a new criteria for flagging!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

That's right spammers, beware! I'm back on the job. In spite of what I said in https://steemit.com/steemit/@neoxian/welp-i-m-done-flagging I couldn't really give up flagging. When I'm browsing "bitcoin" and see a story that has nothing to do with "bitcoin", my flagging finger starts to twitch.

Of course, I'm still going to use the criteria I outlined in https://steemit.com/steemit/@neoxian/what-doyourpart-is-all-about. There is a new one I'd like to add though. With the four post limit that was recently added (which is awesome btw!), spammers have adopted a new technique to game the system. They will post some article on their own blog and then spam out comments pointing back to it all over the place, either randomly, or under popular blogs where they think they'll get more attention. In this case, it would be very inefficient to try to flag all those comments, I'll burn out my voting power in no time, but rather, I'll just flag the post that all the comments are pointing to, and explain my flag there.

Credit to @pfunk for performing this type of flag first (or at least, before me). You can see this flagging work here:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@jillstein2016/steemit-will-be-bigger-than-facebook

The war against spam continues! Pew pew pew!

Sort:

Pew pew pew indeed! Thanks for the time you spend on it. Wish I had gotten the upvote in when it mattered.

It's never too late for an up vote, thanks for your support!

Can you explain how flagging spam builds your curation points. I am scared to use the flag. I will upvote you here though for all your work.

The short answer is that it doesn't. Since I'm a dolphin with a decent amount of voting power, I'll just make a reply explaining my flag and vote it up myself. So I can sort of reward myself for the flags. I'll admit that if you are a minnow (no offense!), it's probably not very rewarding to flag.

If I see someone else performing a good flag, I vote up their flag explanation reply (which you should always do)
Yes if you want to help me, you can vote up my flag explaination, and/or add your own flag. But I'll understand if you want to conserve your voting power for other purposes. Of course I wouldn't turn down steem pennies if someone wants to send them my way.

You really should be tagging your post flag. That way if someone wants to reward flagged we could just go there and see who is doing the hard flagging labor. Do you get curation points if you flag a post and it gets negative votes? Seems like you should.

Ok fixed, my post should have the "flag" tag. You don't get any curation points for a flag, even if many others flag after you.

flagging has no use besides losers like @neoxian doing it for fun

I do enjoy helping protect Steemit from trash like yourself. So yes! It is fun.

@neoxian being the judge, jury and executioner won't end well.
Flagging a commenter's comment as spam I can get behind that when it's actually spam.

But going to the source and flagging it just because you think your job is to be the police around here is disruptive and is a major reason why the price of steem is going down.

To the outside world, what you're saying makes you sound like a complete passive aggressive dickhead who has issues of control and authority and let's face it, who want's to be around that sort of person? Not trying to be harsh, I know you aren't this way. I've read your stuff and followed you for awhile. But to the outside world this is how you look. Why do you want to look that way and since you are a major player here, why do you want to make steem look that way?

I am stating the facts as I see them. When I try to bring over a substantial portion of my own social network to this platform from reddit, facebook etc. They see your posts and posts like yours and say things like "You know what? This guy isn't someone I want to get to know."

Look, the fact is we presently don't have a functional curation system.

The only way content is discovered is when people like you, who have the power, happen to stumble upon it and give it some weight. So don't be shocked if you nouveau rich dolphins and whales suddenly have a bunch of people trying to get your attention.

You guys specifically asked for that when you decided that voting power is tied to the wealth of a person's wallet instead of the wealth of their mind.

What you see as spam, the rest of the world sees as someone simply trying to get your attention. Why not go there and give them some attention? The rules even say "try to befriend dolphins and whales".

Your name is on a list, if you don't want to be on that list it's up to you to remove your name from that list and the only way to do that would be to powerdown, or to spread the wealth by finding stuff that noone else is upvoting and voting it up. Maybe engage them in conversation, who knows you might like it!

In the meantime, you need to realize this tit for tat linkspam and upvote system comprise the very best tools that steem has to offer us right now, because even "following" doesn't work.

But I promise you, if you and others like you decide to make this place unbearable, especially for people who are trying to build a social network by being social with one another, they will leave and all the steem power in the world will be completely worthless.

You'll be the king you imagine yourself to be, but your kingdom will be in ashes.

If it's your blog they come into, then go on their blog and ask them to stop doing it and to please remove their comment. This is social media after all, we're not here to be anti-social jackasses.

So I just kick back and relax and let spammers run rampant. You know, every time I try to browse my favorite topics like #bitcoin or #linux or whatever, I can't because 75% of what I see has nothing to do with the tag I'm interested in. It's so hard to find news on topics you like. I have 60000$ invested in this platform so I'm pretty motivated to defend it. Right now, I don't know why anyone would come here to read something. Everyone is posting like mad in a desperate attempt to get a few pennies or dollars. Most minnow have no real stake in the platform so they have every motivation to game it and milk it for what they can get.

@neoxian

Right so petition the devs to change the rules of the platform so that this is a non-issue. But going about it the way you are is going to turn this place into dig. Good luck with that, that's all I'm sayin.

Here's something that actually could use your attention.
There's currently a bot swarm attacking several members for following your advice.
You should use your powers to attack that. Make the world a better place.

Spammers must be punished, otherwise they will continue to spam. I can't understand how somebody will see that as a bad thing. If your social networks consists of people who are okay with massive spamming, maybe it's best if they don't come here.

Currently I'm not spending much time on Steemit because here is too much shitposts. I have better things to do than try to find something worth of reading in here.

Yea, could you remove this post. Pimping your blog here is pretty rude.

So is flagging someone trying to talk to you. I removed the link. I wasn't pimping I was asking someone who is building a bot to attack you to put her efforts into something more productive.
But yeah it's your house I won't go messing it for you.
Have a nice day!

Fine, fine, I unflagged your comment.

I'm not going to flag you for saying something I don't like. I'm not that much of a dick.

Something for you to take a look at...
https://steemit.com/steemit/@desmonid/s-o-s-i-m-being-targeted-by-a-malicious-downvote-bot
Just sayin this is actually what you're advocating. You should really go explain your views to him.

I'm sorry, when and where did I say I advocated bot swarms flagging or up voting people?

Ok unflagging you too. Not sure where your post was that said that, but I'm too tired to find it.
Anyways, have a good night and I really mean it when I say peace.

#bots auto flagging you? Well voting power is calculated by SteemPower / votes per day and flags count as votes, SteemPower is non transferable. This means if you comment every 20 seconds which is perfectly within steemit rules all that steempower evil whales put on those attack bots is quickly becoming worthless, I know the same bots are flagging all of us minnows so if you are being auto flagged pick a thread and reply every 20 seconds for a few days use your own thread if you dont want to spam anyone. I picked @neoxian and @pfunk to spam because they were frivolously flagging me even before the bots, you could even automate your account to do it. bots fighting bots! If we all fight back against the evil auto flag bots not only will we win but our SteemPower will have effectively more power than before. I love Steemit. I hate whomever sicked their downvote bots on me.

We need more people like you here on Steemit! Keep up the amazing work and maybe we all can come together and do our part to keep this place up to par where we as a community would like it to be. After reading this post I am interested in reading other post you have mentioned here. Thank you for sharing this post and thank you for doing you part

I try to stay away from flagging content. Mostly because unless you are a whale or a dolphin , if they (the person you flagged and their supporters) decide to turn against you, they can do a lot of damage, however i will stand by my point as I previous wrote in my post about downvoting/flagging and follow this method:

@dana-edwards

Thank you
Pew pew! Pew

Nice good job! I don't think you get any Steem for flagging though do you? There isn't much of a reward for flagging but you are doing a good deed though!

No, unfortunately, a flag costs voting power and you are giving up a chance to upvote something that could pay you.

I like working with pencils and notebooks. Now as I venture into this new social realm I'm curious about a couple of things. I don't use computers. I type with one finger so this is actually taking me forever to write , so my question coming from a computer illiterate early steemit adapter with zero coding know how is, are you like the cheetah. Do you have bones or have you been coded to rate words? I wrote the cheetah a note. I'm gonna post it below. I hope it doesn't go against what your trying to deter.

If you are a content -detection robot why are you named cheetah? Detector Bot Rob would be more fitting since in your initial introduction you identified with being a robot. You didn't start off with saying:

" HI I'm cheeta . I hunt down steemit weasels. rrrrrrrrr.... I noticed you been cheating . Remove this or give the proper shout out from the hilltop .I'll chomp down my fangs and flag this post if you don't.

You did not do this cheetah . You called yourself an by animal name but identify as a robot. The only logical explanation is you are a cat shaped robot . Then it all would make sense. But if you are not a cat shaped looking content-detection robot , you really should change your name too Rob.

I get it.!

The name cheetah insinuates the person who posted the content is cheating the system and thus polluting what could be a game changing social media staple that evolves into something truly special . Rob would be an appropriate name as well because people who take other people's content and get upvoted on steemit are now stealing Steem Power that could of financed the true author allowing them to create more content. I'm glad you around hunting and keeping the food chain in place . You will be pretty busy for awhile till early adaptors get the drift that you can chew on them at anytime.

If they don't catch on quick that replying too posts is the way to build Steemit Power up, and thing stay busy , build another content-detection robot for the job . Call him Rob

Hi @poias ! What a funny question. Yes I'm a flesh and blood human being, and my flagging is mostly done manually. Cheeta is a bot written by @anyx and it automatically flags a group of people on it's black list. The decision on who goes on the blacklist is make by high level users (whales) here. I don't know much about it, you'll have to ask @anyx. The other thing Cheeta does is perform a google search on content and if it finds a match, it will not flag but just make a reply to the post stating what it found. This makes it easy for the human flaggers like me to figure out what to do about it.

@neoxian Mostly done manually... That's hilarious :D

I can't speak for @anyx but if I had to guess, I would say that Cheetah is named cheetah because if you are a native english speaker cheetah and cheater sound basically the same to you. Also a cheatah is a predatory animal that is known for it's speed and it serves a purpose in the wild by thinning herds of all but the strongest.

Thanks for protect steemit dude, I would like to help in this
