Curating posts on Steemit

I realized recently that for the first time my voting power was at $1 per upvote. So I thought it would be fair to create a simple post on Steemit outlining the criteria I tend to use when evaluating posts but more importantly to outline what I will not do.

My criteria for curating posts on Steemit are listed in this post.

The sort of posts I'm likely to vote up on Steemit:

  1. Any post which is in support of the Wave Principles as outlined here:
  2. Any post which brings me any kind of insight, amusement, or which increases the value and popularity of Steem/Steemit as a platform.
  3. Any posts which are not abusive or against the Wave principles or the Steemit community principles but which I think can go viral.

Some rules I follow as a curator

Why I will never vote down posts because the post is "making too much money".

I notice there is a trend where some posts either complain about certain posts which seem to be making way to much money, such as 30,000 Steem Dollars for a post on makeup, or hypothetical 100,000 Steem Dollars for a cat meme, for example. These sorts of posts I likely will never vote down.

If the post is bringing value to others, and no one is being threatened or hurt, the worst I'll do is ignore it. I will let the market decide the value of all posts on Steemit and not interfere with that unless the post is causing suffering to other people or abusive in some way.

I don't believe in suppressing the economic value of any content on Steemit merely because I do not find value in the content.

Why I will probably never vote down a post merely because I disagree with the values or principles expressed in the post

I will probably never vote down a post merely because I disagree with the principles or values or politics of the post. If a certain post has different principles or even the anti principles of myself then I would still not vote that post down just because of that. I will either ignore the post or vote up a post which agrees with my values and principles.

If you get a downvote from me then you're getting a down vote because I think you are intentionally being abusive. I'm not very liberal when giving out downvotes so you have to be particularly bad. I downvoted a post which used Amanda B. Johnson's image in a porn link because the post was potentially smearing her for profit and was without her permission for example.

I encourage the use of bots

I encourage people to set up bots to track downvote histories. You'll be able to see if I follow my own policies and correct me if I break them. I encourage all who have enough Steem Power to make a difference in people's lives to set up a similar post as this one to outline their criteria for upvoting or for downvoting so people know what kind of content to produce for Steemit. Votes on Steemit are public knowledge and over time bots and AI will be able to use this information to figure out what kind of content we like.

Thanks for sharing the Wave Principles. They vibe with me.

"I will let the market decide the value"

You are the market.

Value is subjective. I'm a participant in a market but I don't have a right to use my voice to suppress other voices according to my current ethics. If people like certain content then it should be rewarded generously as a signal to others that they are welcome here. In addition, I believe in rewards not punishments. I don't think punishment and negative voting is a way to steer the content toward quality and think it only will generate more negativity.

So I let the market decide value. I decide only for myself what is valuable and I register it in the blockchain by my vote but I do not vote down unless I see abusive or something which I think will damage Steemit long term.

Good stuff here, Thanks for the link to the Wave principals and like that you are well thought out in your votes and downvotes. Very similar to what I have been trying to do, just not as well thought out as you did. Will use this to think through my process. Thanks for posting.
