Has the Steem community adjusted to the current state of the market?

in #steem6 years ago

Its pointless to repeat how 2018 was one of the worst years for crypto. Its even pointless repeating that it was a horrible year for STEEM, even more so.
What id rather like to do is talk a bit about how this affected the community as a whole. Did we reach a point as a community where we managed to adjust to the sharp drop in STEEM price and drop in STEEM market cap ranking?

We all know that volatile times breed all kinds of things. Conflicts and drama; frustration and anger; fear and doubt... even complete capitulation.
I have been here for a while now. Around this time 1 year ago i started spending time on STEEM and i have seen a lot of people come and go.
From the time when a @curie upvote was worth half a months rent in Croatia till now, the landscape of STEEM has changed drastically.

The mainstream casual social media users (like i was a year ago) are long gone for most part with the price drop, many of the larger accounts got grumpy, dissapointed, powered down and sold off their STEEM.
But what ive noticed is that those that were always level headed and realistic about their prospects here, have remained consistent in content creation as well as engagement, moving forward.

Always seems to me that those that are most extreme in either direction (that being FUD or enthusiasm) burn out the quickest.

You could have seen it happening quite a bit these last few months. Those whose expectations arent met and cant deal with it, either go into a frenzy of anger and frustration towards the "outside" world, or they simply shut off, stop caring and move on.
Both things are unfortunately a symptom of users perceiving online interaction as superficial, lacking meaning outside the screen they type their words on, thus do not see either action as being significant in any way.

Anyways...

Have we adjusted though?

I think we did, at least a bit. The users that remain here are a solid base for the future. The spots of influence previously taken by those that have slowly marginalized themselves will be filled by those that actually do have a strong faith in the platform. At this point having faith in STEEM, after we dropped so low in MC and with the STEEMIT.INC messing up so hard, can be seen even as fanaticism.
We need more of that. Not the blind kind, but rather the self-aware kind.
"Faith" and "Fanaticism" might seem like heavy words but in the crypto world i find them to be the right ones.. Something that is quite normal in any other venture needs heavy words to be described, when where ever you look around you, you see gamblers and speculators.

Even though i think we did lose quite a bit of quality creators, this bear market always allows for those that remained, those that might have had a hard time to stand out before, a chance to do so now when the "content market" isnt so saturated. Thats something that might not be great for the platform, but it might be a great opportunity for the individual...

I think it could be fair to say.... with trying not to sound too preachy... that those that stick around during the worst of times will end up being the "lucky" ones in the end.

Ill see you around. Keep on Steeming!

I certainly hope that's the case. The platform is really good despite it's problems. It's the only network I truly enjoy posting to, and now that SteemPress is available, I've resurrected my blog! It feels great to be part of a network that rewards you and at least strives for quality content.

I'm still excited for Steem. It's censorship resistant, a quality we desperately need in the digital sphere, and the numerous skins make the network fun to explore.

I'm glad the price hungry speculators have taken their predictable break. That kind of behavior doesn't produce good content and a lot of fair weather friends.
