Sake Helps Him Meditate

An offering of cup sake makes for a very happy monk. Interesting that they didn't bother with a fancy offering plate or cup for this statue, but just set the jar of cup sake right down on him.

Cup Sake is a common cheap brand that you will find in any convenience store for around ¥100. It's not bad, about what you would expect for only a buck.

I couldn't resist when I saw this and had to move in for some shots.

Sake in Religion

In Shinto, sake is an important element. It is considered pure and so is used in many rituals, including traditional weddings. It is also often given as an offering to the gods, so you may see cups of sake set before statues (which, in Shinto, contain gods and so are gods and not just regular statues). You also often see lots of sake barrels stacked up somewhere on the shine grounds of larger shrines.
