More Street Art in Bangkok - A Walk Through Talat Noi, Bangkok

in #newbieresteemday3 years ago

Recently I shared some beautiful street art that can be found just by walking through our neighborhood in Bangkok. My post was largely inspired by @lynncoyle1's recent posts on murals in Playa del Carmen, Mexico (she's got lots of these, go check out her latest here).

Well, a few weeks ago was a three day weekend here in Thailand, so @suitcasemama and I went for a bit of a stay-cation near the river. We ended up wandering around the streets of one of the oldest neighborhoods in Bangkok: Talat Noi.

Talat noi is Thai for "Little Market" and definitely has that old Bangkok feel. Because it was a holiday weekend, it was almost deserted, which isn't ideal for life-on-the-street photography, but pretty great for aimlessly looking for street art with a very active toddler - the streets were nearly empty.

We went wandering in the truest sense of the word - no map, no GPS, just literally turning left or right based on how interesting a street or an alley appeared. We'd heard about some street art down in this area, so we were on the lookout. Our main target: giant elephants on the side of a building. We hoped to find that one especially.

One of the main streets that runs parallel to the river is called Song Wat meaning "Two Temple" - it's here where we stumbled upon our first mural:

We were a bit disappointed to see the tiger at the center of this mural was damaged. It seems like just a few years ago it was largely intact. Hopefully this was just structural or environmental damage, and not intentional defacing.

Regardless of the damage, you can see that this artist has done some fantastic work. Who painted this mural? The artist is from Romania and goes by the name of Aitch. To find out more about her and her wonderful art check out her website:

We weaved our way in and out of the streets, not finding too much more street art. I took a break to snap this shot of bricks for @photocircle and @erikah's joint #pc-explore and #sevendaysoutside contest:

We were about to give up and find a place to grab some lunch when we turned a corner and saw:

The elephants!

Some beautiful, beautiful work by an artist named ROA. ROA is from Ghent, Belgium and specializes in giant paintings of black and white animals. Check and check! Learn more about him and his work here:

This piece is massive. For a sense of scale, here's a shot of me and @suitcasebaby at the base of the mural.

Pretty satisfying to accidentally find what you're looking for!

Turning back around the way we came, we saw this last piece, directly opposite the elephants:

Zooming in a bit, you can see the signature in the lower right section of the mural is Aryz. See?

So who is Aryz?

Aryz is a street artist hailing from Barcelona, Spain. Find out more about him here:

We continued wandering around the deserted streets for a bit and took some more photos of some street scenes - perhaps I'll do a follow up #walkwithme post so you can tag along.

I hope you enjoyed these works and encourage you to find out more about the artists.

If you're planning on being in Bangkok and interested in seeing this street art in person, let me know and I can point you in the right direction. Happy to help!

While I have your attention, I want to give a short plug for a contest I'll be starting in the next few weeks. If you or anyone you know is a Survivor fan, point them my direction - the grand prize winner will take home 20 SBD!

Oh, that's awesome. Here's what I was photographing not two hours ago:

Steven Wright: It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.
ROA: Hold my beer.

No WAY! Where is that??!

In Copenhagen.

Very cool photos. I love that the wife and baby have their own accounts and the names are hilarious

Ha, thanks! @suitcasebaby isn't a real account, but I think it fits so well I can't help myself :)

Aww shucks. I was ready to follow suitcase baby

Ha! Maybe I should make an account for him! Two isn't too young to be a Steemian, right? :)

Instead of putting the artwork on the fridge, you can post it on Steemit. LoL

These are really cool; the elephants are amazing! The sheer size of them ... it's difficult to imagine how it was ever done! Thank you for tagging me in here too; I appreciate the plug :)

Speaking of plugs, wish I was a Survivor fan, but I don't even think it's on tv here in Mexico :)

The elephants are huge! Easily some of the best street art I've seen in person, it was so fun to find it accidentally!

I wish you were a Survivor fan too, it'd be fun to have you join :)

The accidental finds are awesome! That's how I've found all of mine ... just wandering around!

Really good pictures! Nice post! Thanks for sharring 😊I'm an Street Art lover too like you can see on my blog 😉

Aw, thanks so much @mediawizards, you're making me blush, I bet you say that to everyone! Tell me, what did you like most about my article?

Oo man 2 days ago I read you article. I commented you already now I am looking some good followers.

And how is your approach going for you? Some friendly advice: instead of copying and pasting comments on people's pages and asking for followers, try to connect with people in Steemit through sincere comments and original posts. Until that happens you probably won't find too many "good followers". Wishing you all the best! Shokriah. 😎
