Using fabric from old clothes / 古い洋服の生地を使って縫うsteemCreated with Sketch.

I sew my clothes to make best fit comfortable clothes, to avoid stress to jump around shops to look for an ideal one, AND to be friendly to the environment and other people ... I think I do better than those who shop tons of clothes from fast fashion stores just to wear two to three times but still I had a difficult feeling to buy always new fabric from stores and throw away small pieces. Probably the best is to buy and wear used clothes. On the other hand I will have the same problem that I have to see around shops and they don't fit perfectly :(

My solution these days is to use fabric from old clothes. Thanks to my daughter I started remodeling my old clothes to hers. I made her pant from my broken jeans. I'm happy to see my favorite jeans has its second life.

I made a pullover for my daughter out of my sewing friend's one (shown in the top of this post). I used a waist band and ankle cuffs from my daughter's pant for my friend's baby's pant ... as I couldn't find fabric with fitting color in my leftover fabric box.

In addition to taking fabric for kids' clothes from adult clothes, I remodeled my linen dress to fit better (with my life long pattern!). Now it perfectly fits. Yey yey yey!!

When we see used clothes also a source of fabric in addition to buying new fabric at stores, we have a way more options and can be more friendly to the environment. Used clothes can be cheaper than to buy new fabric especially in Germany where fabric is quite expensive ... not sure it's just too cheap in Asia though. I didn't go to see second hand shops and markets but now I'm interested in going to see them (for fabric shopping) :)

So why not using old clothes for sewing!

I can't say how right you are! Especially today where it's difficult to buy fabric unless you do it online and I prefer to see and touch a fabric prior to buying it.

I don't have a small child, but there are a lot of other things you can make from old jeans or shirts. Jeans should be great for really sturdy project bags for my knitting and shirts (even t-shirts) for their lining. Now I only have to work up the courage to start sewing thick fabric like jeans...

Sewing is thirsty work - have a !BEER

Exactly. Jeans can be used for many other projects. I don't know why but my daughter always don't have enough pant and I'm sewing it continuously ....... ;)

As a next project I want to try this "Hosen Tasche" I found on Austrian Bio magazine. I got an old shirt of my friend's husband. So materials are ready :D

And thank you for the Beer @muscara!

Interesting - that's a bit more fancy than what I found on Makerist.

This looks nice too! I'll try it as my friend has tons of shirts :D

Hey @akipponn, here is a bit BEER for you. Enjoy it!

Recycling fabric from old clothes is a really good idea - especially buying clothes for their fabric, rather than to wear directly :) I was struck by an idea they had on the The Great Sewing Bee to create a new garment that incorporated fabric from several different recycled garments. And there is always patchwork, ragrugs and stuffing for the smallest scraps.

It's really a nice idea and made me smile :) :) I didn't know The Great Sewing Bee. I shouldn't start watching clips on BBC website before I finish my work for this week ... just one ...

First, I love all your handmade garments, especially the flower sweater and your linen dress (and a big hurray if you are content with the fit now). Second, the idea to reuse fabric is a great one. I also try to do it (and will post about it sometimes... I made super cropped jackets from old skirts) But for me many patterns to change/upcycle used clothes e.g. men’s shirt into a woman’s dress or blouse, fail because neither do I have a child nor am I smaller than my husband. The amount of fabric I need for an adult garment is too big.
I guess I must think a bit more about this topic to find a solution.
Thank you for the inspiration <3

In the show shanibeer mentioned The Great Sewing Bee, people use variety of fabric pieces to make clothes :) Some of them are really cool/ We can think out of box and make one out of two ...

(Talking about family body size, I'm less taller than my partner but I'm not slimmer than him 😭So remodeling his clothes isn't possible for mine ... only for my daughter's ... )

Noooooo we need second husbands/partners... which are big and bulky and are only good for giving us clothes to remodel 🤣 On a second thought... this constellation could be a bit exhausting, as they probably need care and food.
I have never seen the Sewing Bee, but have heard of this show (and the books and patterns) I definitely have to watch it in the near future. Using several pieces to make one is a very good idea (my friend Silvi made a Jeans blouse out of several of her old trousers) but I am still to intimidated by their sewing process, improvisation is beyond me :-D

Second big husbands/partners for fabric ... or they can buy two same pants (for us) 😂

I started watching sewing bee and knitting my socks after I finished my work for this yesterday ...It's in away dangerous, I'm not sure I can stop watching the show!

Yes this is wonderful!! I love seeing people keeping clothing out of the landfill, and making old new again!! Well done!!

Thanks caitycat 😊 it is a new finding for me this year. I keep on my experiment!
