The New Hampshire chicken breed were developed during the early 1900s in the state of New Hampshire in the United States. Chicken farmers began with Rhode Island Reds and worked on selective breeding of generation after generation, developed the characteristics in order to have a chicken breed to call their very own. The developed chickens had a chestnut deep red color, with a nearly, lighter and more even shade than the Rhode Island Reds. The chicks were having also lighter red color.

These chickens got a deep, broad body, feathers that grow rapidly, like to be broody and make good mothers. Most of their feathers are colored reddish, brownish buff in color. The color is a light to medium red and often fades in the sunlight. The comb is single and can be medium to large in size; in the females it often lops over a bit.

While mainly grown for their meat, New Hampshires are also moderate producers of brown eggs. Some New Hampshire strains lay eggs of a dark brown shell color. They are available in both standard and bantam varieties. New Hampshires can be competitive and aggressive, with other types of chickens.

They love to free range. In a cold climate, these hens can and will flourish in the most frigid conditions, New Hampshire chickens are content to carry on gently foraging while the other chickens huddle in their coops.

They were initially used in the Chicken of Tomorrow contests, which led the way for the modern broiler industry, and they were also used to develop the Delaware breed of chicken.

Those are beautiful! Kindof look like a Rhode Island Red. I like that they will get out and forage in the cold temps!

This would be a wonderful post under the tag #ghsc. A wonderful, growing online homestead community.

It's a nice breed of chicken, and I would like to breed a few if only I had a big backyard.

I hope someday you can raise a few!

Excellent information to know about this breed of chickens :)
