Great Chicken Breed: Naked Neck

in #homesteading6 years ago

(Wikipedia)

This is maybe an ugly chicken breed because of its featherless necks. But, as long as it can provide meat and eggs for food and profit, then the issue is negligible.

The Naked Neck is a chicken breed that is having no feathers on its neck and vent naturally. It originated in Transylvania, Romania and was largely developed in Germany. The breed is also called the Transylvanian Naked Neck, as well as the Turken, as it was mistaken to be a hybrid of a turkey and chicken.

They can weight up to 2.5 – 3.7 kilograms when fully grown. The known color varieties include: black, white, red, blue, cuckoo, and buff in the U.K. and black, white, red, and buff in the United States.

A dual purpose breed for meat and eggs production, they can lay an average of 120-150 medium size, light brown eggs annually.

The roosters of this breed have a single comb, and increased sun exposure makes the rooster's neck and head become very bright red. This breed has got half the amount of feathers of other chickens breeds, making the chicken adaptable to hot weather and easier to pluck the feathers from its meaty body.

These are docile birds. They are content to free range or be confined in coops and runs. They are easier to tame and are very placid, calm birds.

Sort:

Those are some ugly necks! But then again they are chickens so who cares?

They are a bit different than what we have here. The cock looks nice but the chicken looks a bit funny 🐔🐓
