The Sussex is a British breed of dual-purpose chicken, raised for both its meat and for its eggs. Eight colors are known for both standard-sized and bantam fowl.

Sussex chickens colors are brown buff, light red, speckled, silver and white. The eyes are red in the darker ones but are orange in the lighter ones. They have a medium sized single comb. The earlobes are red and the legs and skin are white in every variety. The brown and red color varieties are rare now with the other colors being common.

The Sussex is one of the oldest breeds that are still in existence today. The Sussex originated in the county of Sussex in England. They were favorite birds for meals more than 100 years ago before the modern Cornish Crosses came along. The original colors were brown, red and speckled. The Sussex today is still a very popular chicken breed to keep. It is one of the most productive breeds today. The hen will lay around 260 large eggs annually that are cream to light brown in color.

They can lay right through cold weather. Though fat-bodied and not prone to flying when mature, they are easily fenced. They forage well and are economical eaters that are friendly and easily handled. Their curious nature means they will often follow their owner around the yard if they think they can beg a treat.

Beautiful chicken I must say, I have never come across this breed of chicken before and I also read about the jet-black ayam cemani breed chicken which is the most expensive chicken in the world.

This is awesome one,you are finding these breeds and helping us,bogs cats and hens and whats next thanks a lot for letting us know.

This breed is very useful. This kind of multipurpose chicken is very profitable for farming.I had no idea about Sussex Chicken. This is amazing that this chicken has got a long history of 100 years.Thank's for sharing such interesting topics.

They also can be capable brooders if put in a quite area.

Sussex chickens are not just an agreeable temperament and a sweet personality, they are also made of tougher stuff! Their strong constitutions and gracious grit make them perfect for cold conditions and ready to handle some heat. They have bold and full bodies with a wide flat back and a short but perfectly proportioned tail. A sussex chickens’ plumage is brilliantly resplendent no matter the hue of their feathers.
