Great Chicken Breed: Rhode Island Red
The Rhode Island Red is one of the most common backyard chicken breeds, and is a great bird for beginners. They are quite a large breed, but are generally a very calm and docile bird, and quite hardy. While their name suggests they are red, over the years they have changed to be more of a reddish-brown color, with their bright yellow legs standing out.
Developed on the poultry farms in Little Compton, Rhode Island during the late 1800s by cross-breeding birds of Oriental origin such as the Malay with brown Leghorn birds from Italy. The Rhode Island Red breed grew in popularity throughout the United States and the rest of the world, eventually becoming the official bird of the U.S. State of Rhode Island.
This chicken breed are very tolerant birds and are willing to adapt to their given environment rain or shine, snow or summer sun. That makes them one of the better chicken breeds for beginners. If you are after chicken breeds that will provide you with plenty of eggs the Rhode Island Red is a wise choice, with its laying performance as its strong point. They can produce over 300 large, rich, brown eggs in a year. They make the perfect companion pet for any farmer and a great friend for kids of all ages.
