The Leghorn is a chicken breed originating in Tuscany, in central Italy. They were first exported to North America in 1828 from the port city of Livorno,on the western coast of Tuscany. They were first called called "Italians", but by 1865 the breed was known as "Leghorn", after the English name for the port city of Livorno. The breed was introduced to Britain from the United States in 1870. White Leghorns are commonly used as layer chickens in many countries of the world.

Both the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association (ABA) recognize a number of Leghorn varieties including white, red, black-tailed red, light brown, dark brown, black, buff, Columbian, buff Columbian, barred, and silver. In Britain, the Leghorn Club recognises eighteen color varieties.

The Leghorn is a great addition to a backyard flock if you need chicken breeds that are good layers, as they are known to produce more than 250, medium sized, white eggs per year. They are a very hardy and heat tolerant chicken breed that love foraging, so will adapt well to most environments. They are known for their large, single comb and full tail, making them a great addition to backyard flocks. While they can be quite the excitable type, which can make them flighty on occasion, the bantam variety can be a little more docile.

Leghorns will do fine in gardens as they are very active chickens, however they are not very tame so are not ideal for people with children wanting chickens as a pet.

We are fine here. Thanks for your concern.

We had Leghorn at one point and these were the least enjoyable chickens we have ever had. It was high drama everytime we came close to them. The upside was they laid HUGEeggs and alot of them!!

Yes, they are very frightful animals.

I like the name Italian more than leghorn. It was quite interesting reading their history. I think I've seen them here in Bangladesh, probably in agro farms.

Well names change when things reach far

ya, and it's a good thing :)
