The Australorp is a chicken breed from Australia, developed as a utility breed with the purpose on egg laying. It is considered the honorary National Chicken Breed of Australia. The most popular colour of the breed is black, which is the only colour recognised in the USA but blue and white are also recognised in Australia.

The original stock used was imported to Australia from England out of the Black Orpington breed in the period from 1890 to the early 1900s mixed with Rhode Island Red. Local breeders used this stock together with mix of Minorca, White Leghorn and Langshan blood to improve the utility features of the imported Orpingtons. There is even a report of some Plymouth Rock also being used. The aim of the early breeders was on utility features. At this time, the resulting birds were known as Australian Black Orpingtons (Austral-orp).

Australorp chickens are a very good choice for any chicken farmer. They are useful for both eggs and meat, friendly, and fine mothers to their brood. The Australorp is an excellent layer and very hardy. Australorps lay about 250 brown eggs a year. They are good foragers as well as good nest sitters.
