Holbrooke Hotel Bar – Pencil on paper – 3 x 5 inches.

Welcome, friends of WOX, to another sketchbook post exclusive to our community.

John Singer Sargent was supposed to have said that it didn’t matter what you drew so long as you drew something. Whatever happened to be right in front of you at the time was a good place to start. It still is.

I absolutely agree, when we do sketch we do not think about the final result, it is just a moment that we want to capture and we do not much time because the moment can pass quickly, like this man at a bar who probably will stand up and leave before the sketch is finished.

But also the same when someone is sketching the landscape, because it is even more noticeable how the time goes, the clouds and of course the shadows that could be longer or to disappear.

I remember some of the watercolour landscape artists they like to sketch immediately with watercolour paints without sketching, have you ever tried? I was wondering if then one should wait till the watercolour dries up completely?

Hahaha, stef1, yes some artists work directly in watercolor and I admire their skill. However, painting in watercolor without a pencil or ink drawing first just frustrates me.
