BOOKS!

You can either hate them or you can love them.

I must say that I never thought I would say that I hate a book. January 2024, and it was a first for me.
If you have covered books with decifix (self-adhesive cover) before, I am sure you will know what I am talking about. You know those “peel and stick” covering.

My stepson had 32 textbooks, scribblers, and files I had to cover this year for school. It was a total shocker for me. I had them all packed out on the dining room table. Each morning I had to pass them to get to the kitchen, and each morning I was hoping to see the task completed, but it did not happen. No fairies are living in this house.

The book that gave me such a hard time

Eventually, I had to give in. I sat myself in front of the table and started. First the scribblers, then the files, and eventually the textbooks. Although it was not only a daunting but also a tiring task, I smiled when I only had one more to cover.

Then it all went wrong. It might have been remarkably easy to cut and apply, but, heaven knows, there was no brilliant end result. Those bubbling spots would just not go away, despite my best attempts. Remarkably, after a long battle, I got it off with the book still intact.

It was time for my second approach. Again, I just could not get it on smoothly. In the end, red in the face, I had to admit defeat. I just got up and walked away, thinking, I hate books!

My mom used to say that there were two things I could do before I started to walk. One was dancing, and the other was reading.
Growing up, she knew too well that if she didn’t see or hear me, I would be in my room reading. What would I read? Anything. Yip, whatever I could lay my hands on, from comics to recipe books, the Bible, Mills & Boons, historical fiction, and the list goes on.

One parent’s night, when my daughter was in junior phase, the teacher showed me what she wrote in her book when she had to make a sentence with the word “reading.”
I cannot remember the exact words, but it was something like, “My mother loves reading so much that she even reads the labels on the shampoo bottles.”

I love reading! I definitely love books more than I hate them.

Now, on to my favorite book of the hundreds of books I have.

I once had to attend a business meeting in Durban, one of the big cities in South Africa. It is only a 50-minute flight from Johannesburg, with the result that I flew in and out the same day.
After the meeting, walking to the rental car, I walked past a bookstore that had a huge sale. I just had to pop in and started browsing through all the books. I was so scared that I was going to miss my flight that I eventually just grabbed some books. Some? No, it was a lot of books. I even had to shop for a bag to pack all the books in, as the shopping bags from the store were way too small.

When I got home that evening, the first thing I did was have a look at all the books I had grabbed. There was this one book, “Who Killed Marilyn Monroe?” that caught my attention.
Heaven knows it was not the kind of book I would normally buy. The last thing I wanted to read about was who killed Marilyn.

As I read them one by one, poor “Marilyn” was always left behind in the bag until the day that I had no more books to read. And then poor Marilyn changed her status from “not to read” to “my most loved book.”

Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, and Errol Flynn were not the names of the famous movie stars, but the names of donkeys! Best of all, Marilyn Monroe was the name of a male donkey. Poor Marilyn was killed, and the help of PI Grace Smith was called upon to help solve the murder.
The owner of the donkeys lived in a seaside town where he used the donkeys to give the children free rides, putting smiles on their faces.

It is a light-reading book written in a surprisingly facetious manner, and believe me, it's a book you don’t want to put down until you’ve read the last word.

You can put the award-winning “Long Walk to Freedom,” the autobiography of Nelson Mandela, which I have read twice, next to Marilyn, and I will still pick it.

Marilyn is still neatly packed away and I cannot wait to bring her "home" once we've finished our building.

I have learned a valuable lesson in life from reading this book, and that is to never judge a book by its cover. Words that are so true when it also comes to us as humans. Don’t judge people; get to know them, and then you judge. You will be surprised!

I’m lucky; I wrote a book, “How you can do it too” that was successfully published and made available in all the major bookstores in South Africa.

I'm still hart broken over this message

Subsequently, I wrote five more books. Books that will never be published as my laptop with my external backup drive were stolen out of my car years ago. An episode that left me defeated more than how I felt when I battled covering that textbook.

In fact, it happened on October 10, 2012, and after all these years, I still have the SMS stored on my phone.

Will I write a book again? I don’t think so, but who knows? I might just start writing when I have more time on hand.

What will I write about? Africa! I would love to travel to all the countries in Africa and then write an informative traveler’s guide for each one. Yes, adventure it will be.

I might just call it “A Guide Not to Kill Africa, Edition 1: South Africa”

The end!

Hello friend, what you say is very funny, some authors are very clever at putting interesting titles, and then one is surprised to see that the story has nothing to do with what we thought.

I'm sorry you lost all that written material when your laptop and backup disk were stolen from your vehicle... nowadays that's the advantage of saving documents in the cloud, you know they won't be lost or at least it's less likely.

That thing about wallpapering books and not having bubbles form is very tedious. I like to do it, but when the bubbles happen, I tend to remove and apply the adhesive paper over and over again hahaha. Well, I haven't done that in a long time...

Thanks for sharing, greetings and blessings.🤗🌺

Haha! How great to know that there is someone who can relate to me and the "bubbles." (•ิ‿•ิ)

I was so spoiled as a kid, as my dad was the one who covered all our books.
Then I had my children, and my sister had none. She made it her duty. Later on, she had her own children, and I had to do it. It was not my favorite job, and I was so glad when my last one finished high school. Never, ever again, will I be covering books.

Then it happened all over again... I remarried, and one was only 5 days old when I got him. My nightmare started all over again. Luckily, there are only 4 more years left!

Thank you for the visit! ପ(๑•ᴗ•๑)ଓ ♡

Now, I believe that change can be made in life. Reading such impactful write up has enlighten my mind to love them. It will not be easy to stop by and grab it to myself but am encourage by this words to learn and love reading.

So sorry for your lost draft books in your stolen laptop. But the Joy of the readers will be fullest, if this question happen soon

Will I write a book again? I don’t think so, but who knows? I might just start writing when I have more time on hand.

As a good writer, I believe and hope that one day this question will come through. Success!

I know you like reading. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Marilyn is a book that cannot sit on a shelf. It is also not a book that can collect dust. It is a book that can be passed on from household to household.

As for writing another book... only time will tell.

The book is not about Marilyn Monroe the actress, what happened in history, or the impact of rumors. It is about a donkey that was killed.
Be careful with your comments as this can easily be taken as written with the help of AI.

Greetings dear friend

It's great to hear that even with so many files, you don't have time to work too hard. Hard work and time passed. However, he has presented the matter in front of us in a beautiful way. It was very good. Stay well, best wishes to you.

I am glad that you've enjoyed my post.

Books make readers so.... greedy 🤣

I am so happy my children read. Last Summer while in Germany my youngest and I took every book we can lay our hands on. We found them between the trash, they are on give away shelves in supermarket and of course in give away and second hand shops but... they are bought as well...

The worst are wokes which fall apart while trying to read them (bad publisher) or the quality of paper of schoolbooks.

(We gave up on covering schoolbooks after the first year, no need to these days).

I like what your daughter wrote although writing in books is a big NO to me.

I'm sorry about your stolen laptop and stories/books. I guess you have no notes or the story in your head and feel to write it again?
I wonder if the thief threw it away or published your books... I think I would always keep that in the back of my head.

Thanks for inviting me, it's hard to pick one favourite book but I already love that donkey Marilyn. 🤣

Hello friend!

Thank you for the visit and the great comment!

I like what your daughter wrote although writing in books is a big NO to me.

Luckily, she wrote in her scribbler, and it was required of her to do so. It was part of the classwork. She knows her mother too well than to write in books. Hulle is my heiligdom. (•ิ‿•ิ)

As for the stories that got stolen, I started to rewrite one, but it was just not the same, so I would rather let it be.
A couple of years ago, I started another one, "Windpomp Stories." I even registered the domain, but then COVID came, and I could not go out to collect material for my book. And now, I will have to travel far and wide from where I live to find a windpomp and the story that goes with it.

Books the fuel for our souls!

I hope, if you yravel, you will share your stories. I'm interested in traveling through Africa too so if you publish that book (no ebook please).

Sometimes a story gets better once rewritten. I'm sorry this is not the case with yours. Kind of frustrating after all that hard work someone stole your creative baby.
Barberian!

A warm hug to you. 🍀❤️

Haha! I have to laugh at the no ebook.
When I published my book I refused for it to be available as an ebook. For me it was not about the money but about the BOOK.

Thank you, a hug right back at you. (づ๑•ᴗ•๑)づꕤ

Good to hear that. A story printed on paper is completely different from one on a screen. A book should be touched, smelled, and be present.

The title of the book “Who Killed Marilyn Monroe?” sound like a movie theme. Indeed I will also try and search for the book online and read it, so I can have full experienced about the book. Thanks for Inviting me and best of luck to you.

Haha! You are right! It does sound like a move theme.
And a movie I would definitely not pay money to watch. But yah, surprises can even come in book format.

Thank you for the visit and the comment! ☕

It happened to me and my wife, but now my kids would be able to read all day long. Sometimes my kids and my wife will have to argue about who read what first when they come with a bag of books.

It was funny thing about "Who Kill Marilyn "donkey" Monroe" I am sure that book is worth reading more than twice.

I was sad to hear that your five books (draft) will never be read anymore, but belive me, you still have those books in your mind and heart, and you will re-write it again one day.

Thank you for inviting me to this challenge, but now I am in the middle of something, that is way I don't post so often this week as well

Wish you all the best my friend

Haha! I am so glad that it happens in other families as well.

Marilyn... I have learned that books can be so rewarding and that there is a lesson to be learned in all of them. Sometimes we miss it completely, and other times it stays with us for months to come.

As for the books that are no longer there, nope, I won't rewrite them again. I tried, but it was just not the same. Maybe one day, when I have nothing to do, I will start writing one. Well, it might be a good thing, as I can just speak the words and AI will write them for me. Who knows? (•ิ‿•ิ)

I was wondering what you were up to. Well, good luck with whatever you are busy with.

I wish you a lovely week! ☕

like your favorite book , I saw a movie but it was little different. ofcourse people hate books which have bad content in it. By reading your post , I have to know that you are also a book writer. Thank you! It is always nice to see a new face commenting on one of my posts.

So often, things happen that we don't understand why, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. There was a good reason for my laptop and my external hard drive to get stolen. The only problem is that, till today, I don't know what it is. (•ิ‿•ิ)

You will have to wait for it 😄. You are most welcome.

Haha! It is already a llloonnggg wait.
