rVSV-ZEBOV the 1st Vaccine to Prevent Ebola

in #health8 years ago

A trial led by WHO ( World Health Organization ) found an experimental ebola vaccine to be highly protective. The findings of a trial conducted in Guinea which involved 11841 people during 2015 also confirms the results of earlier trials which were published last year.

rVSV-ZEBOV is the first vaccine to prevent infection from one of the most lethal known pathogens. The Lancet ( a medical journal ) which published the findings of the recent trials showed that among 5837 people who receive the vaccine no Ebola cases were recorded 10 days or more after vaccination.

Guinea's Ministry of Health, Medicines sans Frontiers and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health were the other participant in the trials besides WHO. The findings are encouraging and gives hope that when next outbreak of ebola hits people will not be defenseless.

Since it's first identified outbreak in 1976, there have been sporadic outbreaks reported in Africa, the worst being in 2013-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak in which 11300 deaths have been reported. This vaccine was much awaited sight of relief for the world.

How it Spreads: It spreads by direct contact with body fluids, such as blood, of an infected human or other animals, may also occur through contact with an item recently contaminated with bodily fluids. Semen or breast milk of a person after recovery from EVD may carry the virus for several weeks to months. Fruit bats are believed to be the normal carrier in nature, able to spread the virus without being affected by it. To realize what a big relief this vaccine can be watch the following video.
