'Lurking' on Facebook May Cause Negative Emotions

in #news8 years ago

A peer review journal 'Cyberpsychology, Behaviour and Social Networking' published a report, according to report stunning revelation were made which now shed light on how regular use of social networking site such as Facebook can negatively impact one's emotional well being and satisfaction with life.

It is not required by you that you totally give up using Facebook to counter this problem.
Taking an occasional break and changing your social networking behaviour will go a long way in lifting your spirit.

An experimental study in the article "The Facebook Experiment: Quitting Facebook Leads to Higher Levels of Well-Being," Morten Tromholt, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, describes a case study in which 1000 participants were given a pretest and than randomly assigned them to one of the following two conditions.

A) Continue using Facebook as usual.

Or

B) Stop using Facebook for a week.

The report was to put light on negative effects of Facebook on overall well being in the context of life satisfaction and emotions.

Her Are The Findings:

After one week without Facebook, the treatment group showed statistically significant improvement in well being, with gains varying depending on the amount of time they previously spent on Facebook and whether or not they were passive users and tended to envy others on Facebook.

As per Editor-in-Chief Brenda K. Wiederhold, Interactive Media Institute, San Diego, California. "Confirming a previous research, this study also found that 'lurking' on Facebook may cause negative emotions. On the bright side of this study as earlier studies have shown, actively connecting with close friends, whether in real life or on Facebook, may actually increase one's sense of well-being,"

Much truth here and also god advice. I also tried not using Facebook for a whiel, not as a decision but just because I was pissed off with it. After a couple of days it felt good not to go on there and afterwards I found that now I had control over "it", rather than "it" having control over me. Upvoted.

It's good to decide what you want to do rather than being led by things.
