EA sports a lot of sports games every year. Whether it's FIFA , NBA Live or, NHL, EA's annual ice hockey spirit. Many people are unfamiliar with sports, but fortunately NHL 18 is generally a very accessible and good game. Want to know why? Then read my NHL 18 review!

Once you start the game, you will immediately be presented with a number of choices. You get the option to configure your gameplay settings. For example, any type of player, whether advanced or beginner, gets the chance to set the game as he or she wants. Once done, follow one of the new modes you can play right away.

New modes are doing well

One of those new modes is Training Camp. This is a fairly comprehensive tutorial that teaches you all the basics of the game. It is one of the few, if not only, sports games that have addressed this feature so much and that is only positive. Often the biggest drawback to sports games such as NBA 2K , Madden or NHL is that the bar is too high, but with the addition of this mode, it's past time at NHL.

You will learn from the movies about what you need to do, after which you get the ice and learn the game a little bit. First, for example, you learn the basics of shooting, then you learn how to hit a slap shot and an untimer and finally bring these newly learned things into practice in a 3-on-2 situation. Ideal! This also applies to fit, defend and so on.

Another new mode is the rather brilliant NHL Threes. As the name suggests, this is a mode in which you can play online / offline, alone / coop and arcade / competitively three to three ice hockey players on a large playing field. This gives you almost unlimited possibilities to set up attacks and play the game completely to your own faith.

NHL Trees has also received a whole own presentation. A commentator that reminds you of big wrestling and boxing matches, giving you very exciting and enthusiastic commentary, free play arenas that you can only play in NHL Threes and gameplay extras as pucks that you, if you score, give 2 goals or at you have 1 goal at and with the opponent one is down: it's all in. Unfortunately, that's good only in this mode of the game.

Presentation and graphics are disappointing

In other modes there is nothing to see and notice about all of this. The comment is repetitive and bores quickly, which led us to turn it off at some point. The soundtrack is also very small, which makes it very repetitive as you always hear the same song in the menus. This is a great pity and, at all in a sports game, a big miss.

Also the graphics are not you-of-it. Despite the fact that NHL 18 runs on the Frostbite Engine, we do not see much of the graphic splendor we can admire, for example, in FIFA 18, a sports game that also runs on the Forstbite Engine. The ice cream does not always look great, the audience is standard and the stands are also quite standard. Fortunately, the players are looking good and that is a big plus.

Another nice point in NHL 18, is the AI. In sports games, they play an enormous role: after all, it's a team sport and winning you are all and not alone. In NHL 18, the AI sometimes gets weird freaks and that's the most frustrating thing that can happen if you're not in the middle of that promising attack in the last quarter to win the match.

We pushed the puck forward, tickled around, made a few solo actions, and eventually we tried to put the puck in front of the second pole and, it may be said, an empty goal. Our player was already ready to score the goal, but at the last moment there was a change: his fellow player bounced against him, we lost the puck to the opponent and scored in our goal. Frustrerender does not get it.

Be a Pro and Franchise Mode are fine

In some sports games, these modes can not be missed: one in which you gain control of a team and get the team and sails of this team to your management and a mode in which you compete as an impetuous talent for the respective comeptition, and so the Hall of Fame to achieve. Of course, this is not lacking in NHL 18 and the two modes do not both disappoint.

Franchise Mode has hardly changed compared to last year, except that you can now do so called Expansion Draft , which adds an additional team. Such an Expansion Draft means that each team delivers its worst player to the new team, which can then make up of those 30 players and will form the new team with those players. For the new player there is enough to discover, but for the seasoned fans it's more of the same.

Also, in the Be a Pro mode, nothing has changed. It's still fun and exciting to get you to the absolute top of the ice hockey world, but after that it keeps up. Be a Pro does not have a cinematic experience like The Journey in FIFA 18, or the story in the MyCareer of NBA 2K18 and that's a miss. Here too: for the new player it will be fun and interesting, but for the experienced NHL player a lot less.

NHL 18 review - a solid sports game

All in all, NHL 18 is a great game. The new NHL Threes is an incredibly fun mode in which you can spend a lot of time without bothering yourself, and the addition of Training Camp is one that many other sports games can still suck.

Also Be a Pro and Franchise Mode are doing well again, even though there is not much news under the sun for the fervent NHL player. The only real drawbacks are the graphics, the presentation that had really been better, and the AI who is quite crazy about it. Fortunately, these are only relatively small points and NHL 18 is worth playing.

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ NHL Threes is fantastic
✔ Be a Pro is fun to do
✔ Franchise Mode is good again
✔ There is a lot to do for the starting player...
✖ ...But to do too little for the experienced mess
✖ AI is doing crazy things every now and then
✖ Presentation and graphics are somewhat disappointing
