Believe it or not, but Guild Wars 2 blows five candles this year. And how much has happened in the meantime: a free-to-play system, an extension, an endgame for experienced players. Path of Fire, the second expansion, is perhaps less groundbreaking, but unprecedentedly good. Why do you read in this Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire review.

The launch of Path of Fire did not go without striking or pushing. Not only did the servers get used to it, many players also suffered from bugs and mistakes, ranging from fast-paced movies and overall crashes, to getting rewards for exploring the world. Completely in line with tradition, you could say: for when does the launch of a new massively multiplayer online game run smoothly?

Fortunately, the problems were short-lived and we could quickly immerse ourselves in the new world of Guild Wars 2 . Or yes, 'new'. For the players wearing the original Guild Wars, the new areas will be known. They return to the dusty Crystal Desert, known for Nightfall, and the adjacent Elona, the land of the Golden Sun.

Huge sandpit

Of course over the years - Guild Wars 2 plays 250 years later - a lot of changes, so the desert literally and figuratively feels like a new sandbox. An enormous sandbox, because Crystal Desert and Elona are currently the largest areas of the game. Larger does not always mean better, but Path of Fire is the exception to the rule. Already walking through the new world feels like a fairy tale.

From eye-catching oases and ancient temples to life-threatening ruins and dusty desert plains: the world in Guild Wars 2 has never been so fun to explore as now. This is largely due to the fact that not all locations are immediately accessible. For how are you still in heaven on the other side of the mountain without killing the cliff? Or how do you make that meter-high jump to get full of treasure at that one cave?

Huge buddies

This is now possible thanks to the introduction of mounts . For the first time in the history of Guild Wars, you can explore Tyria's continent faster than ever with four different beasts: from the carnivorous Raptor, the rainy Springer to the Wolfy Jackal and the Skimmer; a terrifying water sample. All beasts have their own specialties: the Jackal can teleport and you can cross the Skimmer's large watercourses.

Unlike other games in the genre, the role of the mount in Path of Fire is far from limited. For example, you need them to complete certain missions and mini games. Immediately in the first mission, the Raptor is needed to extinguish a village that is on fire. Later, for example, you also need the Springer to climb a huge mountain. In addition, you can train the animals to become a powerful combat companion.

Ending

This is done through a system that has already been introduced in Hearts of Thorns and has been improved in this extension: Masteries . Gamers can achieve new skills when they reach level 80. The bar at the bottom of the screen, which previously filled your way to your next level, now acts as the experience bar for your current mastery . If you play a point, you can spend it on the menu, after which you learn a new skill.

Where ever you had to end up in Heart of Thorns endlessly to learn a new mastery, this is no longer the case. Playing a story mission or participating in any event is already enough to unlock a mastery . A great relief, because the feeling of progression in the end game of Guild Wars 2 was still missing. It's still not the point where it should be, but the creators are always on the right track.

Perseverance

Although the masteries are improved as promised, there are a few things to notice. For example, in the first few hours you walk through the new areas of Path of Fire, you do not have access to all possibilities. This means that some locations are hardly accessible. As a result, it is often impossible to cross the desert, especially because the monsters are more deadly than in the previous expansion.

Yes, in the original Guild Wars 2, it was once again challenged, but on the other hand it sometimes feels frustrating to get lost in the desert, while suddenly a monsters are defeated by a dozen. Especially for inexperienced players who immediately raise their character to level 80 without any prior knowledge, will have to bite the acidic apple in the first few hours.

What. A. Story!

It is therefore not advisable to walk through the mother tongue alone in the main story's missions. Chances are you will not save it. The story in Path of Fire revolves around Balthazar, making an unexpected and remarkable return in Guild Wars. The self-proclaimed War of God has come true forever on the evil path and is committed to destroying everything and everyone.

Sounds cliché, but believe us: rarely has a story in an MMORPG been as good as that of Path of Fire. From the moment you exit the zeppelin towards Crystal Desert and see your giant pyramids, you know: Path of Fire becomes a spectacle that does not know its display.

And indeed, the story tells you time and again of this kind of scene and always comes back surprisingly, with many unexpected turns, gift plot wists and above all: exceptionally good boss fighting. From huge lava samples to broad-shouldered titans: in Path of Fire you will need to get the bottom of it to get further into the story.

Transform but!

Of course, this is not true to celebrities in the series: Unlike other MMORPGs, Guild Wars 2 works more like an action game where you need to aim well, avoid attacks and release new skills by successfully using your current skills. In continuation, Path of Fire introduces nine new specializations; one for each class.

The new specializations expand the options for your character. For example, the Necromancer can temporarily rename Scourger , who protects his teammates with deadly spells. Somebody who plays as Thief can transform into Deadeye , who can become a trained murderer with his sniper rifle.

And so, all classes have a new specialization that Guild Wars 2 can also play in the endgame from another angle. Thus, despite the absence of a new class or race, Path of Fire has an impressive amount of content. For a very modest price of thirty euros, you get an incredibly comprehensive extension home that makes one of the best MMOs of the moment a lot better.

Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire review - Stands in fire and flame

No, Path of Fire is not the next step in the evolution of MMOs, but it is by far the best MMO we've played for a long time. Although expansion does not introduce new races, classes or other groundbreaking features, it really feels like a total package.

The extensive, intriguing campaign, the beastly fat mounts, the refreshing new specializations and, of course, the incredibly beautiful game world of Guild Wars 2 Path of Fire may be the best MMO of the moment. Highly recommended!

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Gigantic and exciting game world
✔ Spectacular story
✔ Mounts create new dimension in exploring game world
✔ Grind tied up
✖ Requires some perseverance in first hours
✖ No new class or new breed
✖ Occasionally, the sense of progression is lacking

During launch, we faced many of these problems aswell. Luckily, the day after, everything was just fine :-)

I really like the expansion so far! I was afraid of too much sand, but that didn't happen. Atleast there's enough to catch your eye besides the sand. I also like the mounts, which I didn't think I would. So far, the PvE content has been good enough to not send me back to WvW, where my heart really lies.
