Is FIFA comfortable on the throne or does Pro Evolution Soccer send its arch rivals with a shot in the crossing home? For the change, we do not give an answer to that question. Take pleasure in this: PES 2018 is - again - a dike of a football game and simply not comparable to its arch rivals. Why you read in this PES 2018 review.

Every year, it's one big mud battle between FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer fans . That's what we understand. Football is emotion. Just as in real life, the love of supporters for their precious club is incredibly deep. FIFA and PES players each have their arguments to indicate why their game is better.

Sparkling exciting

Based on sales and marketing, FIFA is and remains the undisputed king of virtual football. However, we listen to the critics, then it's another story. In that case, PES goes out with the Champions League. Especially in recent years, PES scores in average on average and sometimes even higher than EA Sports's competitor.

How this eternal fight is being decided this year is awaiting. Certainly, FIFA must come from very good homes: PES 2018 is one of the best footies of the moment, thanks to some smart improvements.

Pioneering innovations do not have to be expected by fans. As for the gameplay, the changes in football are especially subtle. This year, PES feels a lot more organic. In every game there is something you think: this is really football. This is why PES is loved by so many football fans. Delightfully unpredictable, nagging exciting and above all incredibly realistic. And by some subtle changes, PES shines like never before.

The wide shoulders of Piqué

For example, take the 'contextual shielding' as Konami calls it. Players are now working hard to shield the ball from their opponents. This way they grow up and with other players, they like to fight. Broad-shouldered soccer players like Keita and Piqué can of course like no other and it's nice to see that in PES, too.

What is also noticeable is that players can now take a ball with any part of their body. A ball reaching halfway can now control their thighs, by way of speaking. Little spectacular would you say, but in practice this leads to a much faster continuation of the football game. Furthermore, passes seem to arrive much less quickly. This is because soccer players now throw a foot, or even their entire body, into the pitch of the ball faster.

Cynical laughs

When a player can actually hit the ball - even if it's sliding, snook diving or a forward leap - then happily happening too. Players who do not play the ball make slimmer choices in this game: they enter the spaces, adore oneself and wear the proverbial chalk on the shoes. On paper, the above-mentioned improvements do not make much sense, but together they pursue one thing: realism.

Football lives like never before in PES. Everywhere something happens on the field, small duels everywhere take place and players everywhere express their emotions. From pure frustration, cynical laughs to ultimate joy. These emotions come alive with the ultra-realistic faces and facial expressions. The grin on Ronaldo's face after a shot in the intersection, Kompany's unbelief after a red card in his eyes, it's always a pleasure to watch.

Paper shredder

As lively as it is on the field, it's so dead it's out. For years, PES has left the image behind the competitor when it comes to atmosphere and exuberance, and by 2018 that thinking is unfortunately still alive. New video clips in the dressing room and in the catacombs prior to a match do not change the fact that PES 2018 generally leaves a fairly sterile impression.

For example, the comment is again badly bad. No emotion, complete sentences are literally read and repeated to infinity. Also, the number of scenes in which the referee must intervene is almost counted on one hand. The spectators again look like they have just come out of the paper shredder. At this point, PES 2018 is overshadowed by the competitor left and right.

Messi at the Spurs?

In the field of content, FIFA did not have a child for PES for many years, but it is slowly beginning to change. The official license of the Champions League has of course been an eyecandy for many years, and also the Master League, the counterpart of FIFA's career mode, is gaining everlasting identity and personality. For example, the transfer system has been expanded with new negotiation opportunities and you will receive assignments during the season that you have to accomplish.

The main addition to the existing content, however, is Random Selection, a lukewarm mode that returns to the series after many years. Here, players choose a team, where the game randomly adds players to your team, depending on the settings you have chosen. Lionel Messi at Tottenham Hotspurs? Cristiano Ronaldo at FC Barcelona? Everything is possible. In addition, there is a swap round, which lets you unpack players from other teams. Random Selection is by no means one of the nicest modes that PES has added in recent years.

No United, but Man Red

In addition, there is another online cooperative mode, with one or two friends on the couch taking it to the rest of the world. You can also link to other players whose profile shows which playing style he or she uses. This way you'll see a lot of pinging, the ball is playing around or excels in distance shots and giving off. Not only fun, but also useful: you know immediately what meat you have in the tub.

When it comes to licenses, PES has been a thorn for years. Despite the fact that Konami collaborates with a number of top teams this year, such as Barcelona, Liverpool and Dortmund, many real names are missing again. If you want to play with Manchester United, Juventus or Real Madrid, you will have to take pleasure in neptenues and a fake name. Bayern Munich is not even in the game at all. It is hoped that this will change over the years, but given the real license war between EA and Konami we think that chance is small.

PES 2018 - Gorgeous in small details

Is PES 2018 the undisputed king of football? Yes and no. When it comes to complete control: absolutely. It is and remains unmatched. From perfectly timed slidings, customized to crooked distance shots in the intersection: anything that's possible in real football, you can also perform here. Realism and fun are the first thing in PES 2018, so every pot is really fun to play.

If we look at the situation outside the field, and thus to the atmosphere, appearance and presentation, the game significantly less than competition. So, do not mind repeating the same comments and playing Man Red instead of United, then you probably get the best football game of the year with PES 2018.

The plus and the drawbacks

✔ Wonderfully unpredictable and exciting
✔ Subtle improvements make game even more realistic
✔ New refreshing modes
✖ Licenses remain thorn in the eye
✖ Makes less impression outside the field
