Incredibly beautiful fruits and vegetables ~ The gorgeous Blood Orange

First of all I would like to congratulate @lenasveganliving to the 30th anniversary of her wonderful and so inspiring contest #fruitsandveggiesmonday! It is one of the things I really try to contribute preferably every Monday and I look forward to the other contestants entries with curiousness. I love it! There is something that amazes me everytime I go to the Green Market: the variety of shapes and colors fruits and vegetables appear nowadays. Are they all new sorts? Or is it that I just didn't pay attention to the fact a few years ago? Or are these old sorts that have disappeared one day from the market and get a revival recently? It might be a mixture of that reasons I had made earlier. Anyway, some of these fruits, lettuces and vegetables are so beautiful in my eyes that I that they deserve much more attention. I would like to honor these beauties with a few future posts ...

And that's the first one: blood oranges 🍊

I discovered blood oranges a couple of years ago and loved them for their wonderful taste, the beautiful color of the flesh and the special, very tender texture. I can't wait for the weeks every year when they are on the market again. It's mostly around January and February.

I was very amazed when I saw this sort of blood oranges on the market stand the other day. I have never seen oranges like this before. They were so pretty that I needed to buy them instantly regardless the cost! You will definitely understand me:

Beside the fact that blood oranges taste fantastic and look beautiful they are very healthy too. They are a very good source of Vitamin C, folic acid, anthocyanins, Vitamin A and also contain some calcium and are thus a good source of this mineral.

Unfortunately blood orange season is actually almost over. But all the good things have to come to an end, right? And blood oranges will be back in a year or less, right when winter shows us its  fiercest face and brightens up these days.
