Hiking - Freewrite - a shoesteemCreated with Sketch.

A shoe says so much about a person. My friend chose her husband based on his shoes. She is an American Muslim and had a son already when she converted to Islam. She was looking for a husband, and in the tradition, people are not so much into dating as into interviewing the potential partner to see what they are like.
And, of course, the advice and recommendations from friends and families are important. So, she met her potential husband. He also had children and was divorced from his nonmuslim wife - both my friend and her husband were converts to Islam.
During her interview, she thought he was nice, but what sold her on the deal was that his shoes were well-taken care off. She figured that if a man cares enough to take care of his shoes, he cares enough to take care of his family as well.
Her husband had also become a great friend of mine. We all were hiking together every Sunday. A great big group made up of all kinds of people.
We had Muslim women covered to the hilt and American girls with just about everything being visible to the sun. We had immigrants from Somalia and other places and lots of born in the States who never had seen another country.
We all came together to hike.
At one point, I had the idea that I wanted to hike Mt Whitney. One of my friends had done it before, actually, she used to hike it once a year. And she knew how to train.
My friend and her husband decided they were going to go as well. That started our training.
We met a couple of times during the week in our very local city mountain, started to wear backpacks and gradually filled them more and more with rolls of pennies to get used to carrying weight.
On weekends, we did first local longer hikes and then started to go to mountains with peaks around 11000 feet.
Living at ocean level meant that we weren't used to the altitude at all and one of the fails on Whitney is altitude sickness. The symptoms range from getting dizzy to throwing up to becoming completely disoriented and non-functioning.

I love taking a peek at your memories and life because of these freewrites. You make me smile :) And what your friend said about a man taking enough care of his shoes, that I have heard a few times before too. Often, people get attracted to those who take care of themselves or their belongings and choose them as life partners based on that quality. I am glad your friend found a nice husband :)

Yes!! He was a great guy. He passed away a couple of years ago and is missed!!

Oh may his soul rest in peace. Sad to hear that.

He was very secure in his belief and is headed to jenna. And he had a long life. I don't know how old he was - he never told, but his older kids were at least 40 when he passed. I am pretty sure he was over 70. and I send an email out asking if someone has pics for me...

Oh that's wonderful that he had a long life and was secure in his beliefs. Hope he receives the highest rank in Jannah :)

And we spend so much time hiking together and I couldn't find even one picture!!! I think they got lost in a switch of computers or something.

Oh that's bad, you should have had a picture or two with them.

One time I got altitude sickness climbing our neighboring Mt Ruiz, I had to wait it out at 15,500 ft (4700m) with @ecoinstante while the rest of the group continued on for a bit and headed back. Right in the middle of some stinky sulfur fields!

Mt. Ruiz is difficult and dangerous to summit, and may actually be illegal if there were anyone up there to tell you so.

That is high!! I tend to get altitude sickness and we went to Mammoth for several days to get used to the altitude. I got sick the day we drove to the portal and the day of the hike, we popped aspirin on a regualar basis. that seems to help.
The sulphur might have helped you from passing out :) My friend told me about a hike when they had to hold on to one of their friends because he was so disoriented that he kept being in danger of falling off the trail - and in areas - that would be deadly.
Glad you came back in one piece!!
