Bibimbap at 골목집 (Gulmokjip) - Gapyeong-gun near Namiseum

Dinner at 골목집 (Gulmokjip) -

This is known as Bibimbap. It is a dish comprising various vegetables and seaweed with egg and red bean paste being the standard components. This particular variant is served in a hot stoneware bowl. Be careful when you handle this, the contents have to be rapidly mixed before the bowl cools down. There is a knack to mixing this as you want to leave some of the rice to become scorched as it stays in contact with the bowl for longer. You can regulate how much of the rice is scorched. It is very unique and you have to try this at least once.

This quaint lunch and dinner restaurant known as 골목집 (Gulmokjip) was established in 1981 and has a reputation in this town for serving the tastiest and most affordable traditional Korean dishes.

A quiet downtown area

Gapyeong is the town closest to the famous Nami River Island. This attraction results in the station 2 km outside the town to be very busy. There are also other attractions here like the Jaraseum Jazz festival. Some 15 km to the east are many popular holiday resorts. as well as beautiful mountains perfect for cycling. The downtown area is not very well frequented though, as it appears people make their way through the town to their destinations or simply don't make their way into town at all. If you do find your way downtown, there are many establishments serving the dishes for which the area is famous: - barbecued chicken (Dakkgalbi), but if you want anything else, it is not easy to locate.

You will be fortunate to find this restaurant as it is something of a local town secret. It is located just a 5 minute walk from the Rail-bike station. It is small, with just 10 traditional tables, each seating 4 people. Diners are seated traditionally on the floor and the atmosphere is very congenial.

There are many additional titbits served along with the meal, free of charge. This evening we were happy to be served these two types of kimchi.

As you can see, the food is fantastic. My family and I often frequent the place for a lunch or dunner and a coffee afterwards. The proprietors are very friendly and always chat to patrons with a smile.

But wait, what's this?

The owners have recently started a coffee bar in the restaurant. This is quite unusual for a Korean restaurant of this nature to serve coffee or any drinks other than water. So this coffee bar is a fantastic treat. The restaurant hours are just around lunch and dinner times, but the coffee is served to customers for most of the business day hours.

The coffee is a perfect end to the fantastic meal, or just as a passing treat while shopping downtown. You will not be disappointed when you visit Gapyeong, make sure Gulmokjip is one of your stops.
