Dining Out - Marrickville Pork Roll

Marrickville Pork Roll

Sadly, they don't have their own website, so the link is to trip advisor's review page. If you prefer other sites try one of the many others on the google search. But I do have to agree with a large amount of the reviews. This place produces one of the best Banh Mi in Sydney, out of a tiny shop front that doesn't actually get any bigger when you go inside.

I was there on a good day, or just a good time. There was only a few people waiting before me

Inside there is room for 2, maybe 3 customers at a time, in a space no wider than the door is, with the counter along one side and the drinks fridge at the end of it. The staff don't have that much space either, with at least 3 working the day I was there, it wasn't so much a production line as some sort of strange dance as they all served customers, stuffed rolls full of ingredients, charged the price and hand over the correct roll to the correct customer. Sometimes that means calling out for them as they're waiting out the front to make room for the next customer.

I took this panorama with my back against the wall while ordering and talking with the staff, as they move you through pretty quick. I was paying for my roll as soon as I finished

Their menu is simple, though they've expanded from the original menu that had just 5 rolls on it, (Pork Roll, BBQ Pork Roll, both of them with Pork Skin, and a Salad Roll) to also do a Meatball roll, Chicken roll, Tuna Roll, and a Pork Skin Roll. Though the option for Skin on the other rolls seems to not be mentioned.

Having had the Banh Mi Thit (Pork Roll) previously, this time I decided on having the BBQ version, (Banh Mi Nem Nurong), and as usual they ask about chilli before putting it in. I'm a fan, so just automatically say yes to it, but it's useful for those that can't do chilli. With the glass display it's easy to see how they put together the sandwich (at least if you get enough time to watch from inside the shop), and it all seems to be done with such care, while still being quick. Things aren't just shoved in all over the place, but seem to line up nicely along the roll, asides from the carrot, that isn't shredded like in a lot of places, but seems to be matchsticks, but still uncontrollable with their small size. One of the things with their chilli that I love is that it's so well spread through the roll with yet another sign of their care about what they're doing. Which is making the best Banh Mi around, and possibly the best 'meat and salads' roll too, At least for under $10 anyway. And this is well under $10 with many of the options $5 and under.

So this is probably the shot you've been looking forward to. Such a crusty delicious roll

From rolls baked on site daily, (yeah, even in the tiny location they don't source rolls from elsewhere!) to the speed of service and price, to the care of the production even when there's a queue out the door (not a big thing here...) and up the street, this place really is the best banh mi. If you've got a better one, I'd love to try it. If you haven't tried Marrickville Pork Roll, and love rolls with stuff in them, get out there tomorrow and get one.

Sorry it's blurry, but this is what you get when care is taken in construction. All the way down the roll looks basically the same.

And as a final thing, they expanded to a new store (sure, 2 years ago...) just down the road as well, which bakes it's rolls throughout the day, rather than all in the morning. And conveniently it's not far from the train station, as opposed to the original store that's just off the corner of Illawarra Rd and Marrickville Rd.

Everytime I go to Marrickville I see the line and change my mind to eat something else.... one day... just one day I'll finally get my hands on it haha

Best advice for me was to get there half hour before lunch, or an hour after, but the risk there is that they'll be sold out of rolls...

I have also heard about this many times. I hardly swing by that way though. But If I do I will definitely try it out.

Yeah, it's normally out of the way for me, even though it's only a few km away, but I've acquired another specialist who is nearby, so I see a few of them in my future. I've also found that the Foodworks just down the road stocks the cordial I like (Bickfords Blackcurrant) that seems to be unavailable everywhere else in this state.

I am pretty sure I have seen it before at Coles or Woolies. If I happen to swing by the supermarket and see it I could bring you one on Saturday

That would be awesome (and awesome to know which Coles/Woolies stock it. It's been most of a decade since I've seen it regularly in them outside of SA, and even there it's not in all of them anymore :(

I do have most of a bottle currently, so I'm not desperate either, so no biggie if you don't get around to it/don't find it/forget/etc.

Haha awesome you went to this place! It’s mine and my family’s go-to (we’re Vietnamese so standards are high :P). It’s always the most consistent and we love the fact it’s simple no frills.

Glad you enjoyed it!

Excellent to know that they rate highly with Vietnamese people as well.
Usually a good sign if the people who's food it is are lining up to eat it.

I'm quite a fan of the Banh Mi, and like when good consistency and quality come together

Haha yes I grew up on this stuff so I’d like to think I know what I’m talking about but the general concensus definitely is that everyone who has tried it likes it!

They provide more filling than the nearest popular store which is Hong Ha in Mascot. The only other good ones are Cabramatta and Bankstown but even then my personal opinion is that Marrickville is superior!

Glad you enjoyed it and looking forward to meeting you on Saturday!

With the impression I get of the size I'm kind of imagining that once there's three people in the store the queue will extend out the door XD

goatsig

Yeah, if there are 3 customers inside the store, the 4th is definitely outside. If the 3rd can even fit completely inside!
