The mistake of Jack - Chapter 10 - FICTION

in #fiction7 years ago

The look on Jack’s face was an unfamiliar one for Miranda. He stood there, looking at his phone and he looked both surprised and shocked. She knew that she pressed the lock button so that it would be the first thing he would see when he unlocks it. The way it happened was unplanned though. She initially thought that she wanted him to discover the pictures without her being present, but she hadn’t planned on him wanting to phone a doctor and the whole thing coming out as fast as it did. There were only tears left on her face, but there was nothing funny about the whole situation anymore. She felt sadness and had to keep her tears back as she did not want to break down in front of him.

Jack didn’t know what to say. He looked at Miranda with pity and at that moment, he knew exactly why she was behaving the way she did. With his index finger, he paged through the pictures. As he was about to say something, Miranda, still sitting with her arms folded, interrupted him. “Did you sleep well, Jack?” with the emphasis on his name. Jack couldn’t answer even if he wanted to as Miranda’s next question came up: “Did you have a good dream, Jack?” again, emphasizing his name and lit up another cigarette.

Miranda, you don’t understand…” Jack tried to explain.

Oh, I think it’s pretty straight forward not to understand, Jack. You know I do have a brain, even though you might not think so. I understand pretty clear thanks. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on…” Miranda couldn’t finish her sentence.

Shame on you…Yes yes…Well shame on you Miranda! Shame on you for smoking in the first place. Shame on you for throwing burning cigarette buds at me and shame on you for invading my privacy like that!” Jack said in anger.

If my mother, who had been right about you since day one, hadn’t raised me so well, I would have rather set you on fire! This must be the reason why the two of us never had any children! God wanted to protect them from a cheating father like you!” Miranda yelled. She walked closer to him and started waiving her cigarette very close to Jack’s face. “Cindy! I should have guessed. Again, I’m probably the last person to find out about this as I’m sure your boss and everyone in the universe already knows!

Yes! Everyone knows!” Jack yelled back.

Miranda could not believe her ears. Did he just confess his crime without even denying it she wondered.

They all know Miranda…” Jack continued. “…how I was suspended from work the day before yesterday because of that woman accusing me of sexual harassment, which I had no part in, by the way!

Excuse me?” Miranda asked irritated. “You got suspended for sexual harassment which you damn well deserve! Even if I hadn’t seen those pictures, I would still believe it. A leopard never changes its spots!

Jack grabbed his hair with both his hands in anger and started pulling it. “Why doesn’t anyone believe me?” he shouts angrily.

Suddenly, Miranda felt scared for her own safety. Jack had done many things but he has never lifted his hands for her and he looked as if he might hurt her. She took one step back and then ran towards the door. Jack was so angry that he started throwing things around. He even stepped on her packet of cigarettes on the floor, squashing it in circular motions with his foot. Miranda eventually got the door open and ran outside, but Jack did not follow her.

It was still dark outside and although she did not have a watch to see the time, she could sense that sunrise was approaching. It was chilly outside and she did not have any shoes on but she could hardly feel the cold as she was only focused on the noise inside the house. Glass shattering was the only sound that she could hear. One thing was sure: she was not going back inside until he had calmed down. Thank goodness the neighbors are still asleep she thought to herself. She had so many things to tell Audrey tomorrow at their coffee date. Her sister has been the only one who have helped her through Jack’s affair last time and she never judged. She always believed that Jack would never do such a thing again and look what has happened now.

As it got quieter inside the house, Miranda was unsure whether it was safe to go back. She slowly walked towards the front door to listen if she could hear anything. From the 20 minutes she was outside, it suddenly sounded way too quiet. She could hear footsteps inside. The cracking of shattered glass below the footsteps stood out most and as she entered the door to see the damage that had been done inside, she heard screaming! Shockwaves ran down her spine as the screaming continued in a high pitched sound of voice. It’s Tracey she thought and realized that Tracey must have heard everything from her room which is right outside the kitchen door.

Help! Madam Help!” she heard Tracey screaming next.

I knew that guy was no good!

Hey @richq11 ... I think I'm starting to believe him...Well, kind of...let's wait and see.

There's something fishy about this guy to me!

You see something fishy everywhere...perhaps you were a spy somewhere...or a detective?
